Halina Ostańkowicz-Bazan's insight:

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a method initiated by teacher-facilitated discussions of art images and documented to have a cascading positive effect on both teachers and students. It is perhaps the simplest way in which teachers and schools can provide students with key behaviors sought by Common Core Standards: thinking skills that become habitual and transfer from lesson to lesson, oral and written language literacy, visual literacy, and collaborative interactions among peers.

30+ Ways Teachers Can Use Pinterest

30+ Ways Teachers Can Use Pinterest | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it

Pinterest is  an online platform that is making such a huge buzz in the world of social media. Focusing on the visual component, Pinterest attracted a huge number of internet surfers and within a few months after its launch, its user data base counted millions.

People tend to favor visual attractiveness over the textual one. This is probably understood given how the mind easily and quickly processes and stores visually encoded data compared to the written code.

As we have progressed, not only in our use of technology but also our understanding of effective leadership, we know that communication includes effective talking but, more importantly, listening. Being able to hear what is being said from those we serve is extremely important to how we develop our schools, and the conversation is extremely valuable. Yet, many schools and organizations use social media in the old fashion: sharing information but not having a conversation. In reality, just because you have ears doesn’t mean you are listening.

Posters are great learning tools that we use in our classrooms. They attract students attention and they can seamlessly communicate various concepts and ideas . These ideas can range classrooom rules to key grammatical structures. Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has recently started a section called Educational Posters where we feature some awesome posters we come across online and that have a great educational value.

There are pockets of teachers who do see how important this is. I can understand the pressure of teaching to the test though. Senior management in schools need to take responsibility to make this change. Teachers don't understand the social networking tool so difficult to teach....that's what I'm here/there for :)

Benefits of Online, Face-to-Face Professional Development Similar, Study Finds

Benefits of Online, Face-to-Face Professional Development Similar, Study Finds | Are you a Global Citizen? | Scoop.it

Researchers found similar effects on student learning and teacher behavior regardless of whether teachers took part in online or face-to-face professional development.

Fishman said that administrators and policymakers should see the findings as further evidence that online teacher professional development, while no silver bullet, can be a viable alternative to the traditional model.

"There's some hesitation on the part of teachers who think that online [professional development] is somehow less valuable to them because of a lack of personal connection," Fishman said.

"I think this study may make them a little more optimistic."

Teachers are really ready for this.   Receiving some of your PD via online means is less expensive and equalizes the participants.  For many teachers this what they have been waiting for.  I say let's grab a 'holt' of this and go.

I think that this is such a great visual for my generation. It is so representative of how we rely, and use technology to demonstrate common core values in the classroom. This is great but it also could be our achilles heel, we need to apeal to all types of learners and visual is just one, there are so many more type that must be catered to so that we can be affective.
