*In 2008 FWS listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, citing climate change as its primary threat. 

*For 30 years, the Arctic refuge’s coastal plain has been at the center of a heated debate over oil and gas drilling.

*there is no safe way to drill for oil and gas in the Arctic refuge, no way to guarantee wildlife will not be harmed by resource extraction in the refuge and no way to ensure the Arctic refuge will be protected for future generations if Congress allows oil and gas exploration on the coastal plain.
