Sephardic Jewry and the Holocaust: The Future of the Field

Sephardic Jewry and the Holocaust: The Future of the Field | Archives de la Shoah | Scoop.it

Co-organized through the Sephardic Studies Initiative of the University of Washington’s Samuel & Althea Stroum Jewish Studies Program and the Museum’s Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, this symposium explores the unique history of Sephardic Jewry and the Holocaust.

Although extensive research has been conducted on the Holocaust in recent decades, the experience of Sephardic Jews on the periphery of occupied Europe, along the Mediterranean, and in Vichy-controlled colonies in North Africa has remained relatively unexplored. Understanding the Sephardic experience during the Holocaust forces us to refine our assumptions about its scope and the qualitative differences in the persecution, destruction, resistance, and survival of varied Jewish communities under occupation.

70 th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

70 th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising | Archives de la Shoah | Scoop.it

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The events that took place in the spring of 1943 have left an indelible mark on the city of Warsaw. The Uprising – the first among several other uprisings in the ghettos scattered on the territory of Poland – was also first such an event in occupied Europe. After its suppression the Germans razed the ghetto to the ground – only to finish demolishing the whole city of Warsaw a year later, after the uprising of 1944. The fights took place in the very heart of the capital, but at the same time they were conducted “beyond it”, in the closed district cordoned off from the Aryan side witnessing the tragedy behind the walls.
