How to Promote Critical Thinking with Online Discussion Forums

How to Promote Critical Thinking with Online Discussion Forums | E-Learning Archive | Scoop.it
Critical thinking is an expected learning outcome of higher education along with mastery of a studied discipline. Yet several studies including one outlined in Academically Adrift, suggests that a ...
Eoin McDonnell's insight:

I remember working on a blended learning course with a lecturer in 2007 where he stated his aim as being "to develop students who ask questions". He spoke about the latin root of 'educate' - e-ducere meaning "to lead out".

The activity we designed rested on tightly-designed and managed discussion fora.

Some of the points here (e.g. online discussion needs design and tutor engagement) are perhaps obvious but, given the current student-led fora of many MOOC's, they bear repeating.

How video production affects student engagement: an empirical study of MOOC videos

How video production affects student engagement: an empirical study of MOOC videos | E-Learning Archive | Scoop.it

Leo Havemann's curator insight, April 2, 2014 6:33 AM
Philip J. GuoUniversity of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA Juho KimMIT CSAIL, Cambridge, MA, USA Rob RubinedX, Cambridge, MA, USA

"Videos are a widely-used kind of resource for online learning. This paper presents an empirical study of how video production decisions affect student engagement in online educational videos. To our knowledge, ours is the largest-scale study of video engagement to date, using data from 6.9 million video watching sessions across four courses on the edX MOOC platform. We measure engagement by how long students are watching each video, and whether they attempt to answer post-video assessment problems.

Our main findings are that shorter videos are much more engaging, that informal talking-head videos are more engaging, that Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging, that even high-quality pre-recorded classroom lectures might not make for engaging online videos, and that students engage differently with lecture and tutorial videos.

Based upon these quantitative findings and qualitative insights from interviews with edX staff, we developed a set of recommendations to help instructors and video producers take better advantage of the online video format. Finally, to enable researchers to reproduce and build upon our findings, we have made our anonymized video watching data set and analysis scripts public. To our knowledge, ours is one of the first public data sets on MOOC resource usage."

Simple but effectful: Nuts and Bolts: Making Video More Social by Jane Bozarth : Learning Solutions Magazine http://t.co/AHdUbndH4f
Eoin McDonnell's insight:

Some very salient points about video design. You don't just dump it on the learner - what are their objectives in watching this video? What should they watch out for? What will do they afterwards?

Setting the context so the learner knows what's expected of their use of the learning object better prepares them to engage with it.

From 1995 - Electronics and the Dim Future of the University

Eli M. Noam (Science Magazine)

Eoin McDonnell's insight:

This was shared by Seb Schmoller on the ALT mailing list. Very prescient article from 1996 stating that " It is hard to image that the present low-tech lecture system will survive...The tools for alternatives could be video servers with stored lectures by outstanding scholars, electronic access to interactive reading materials and study exercises, electronic interactivity with faculty and teaching assistants...While it is true that the advantages of electronic forms of instruction have sometimes been absurdly exaggerated, the point is not that they are superior to face-to-face teaching (though the latter is often romanticized), but that they can be provided at dramatically lower cost".
