Cultural Appropriation is a common cause for concern among supporters of
minority and indigenous languages and cultures. The controversy of the
Washington Redskins name and the seemingly never ending stream of
ill-conceived fashion and celebrity photo shoots depicting non-Native
people wearing headdresses, feathers, and other stereotyped versions of
“Native American” traditional dress are cases in point. But this week, an
intriguing question was posed on a Facebook group dealing with Regional,
Minority, and Indigenous Languages that takes the topic of Cultural
Appropriation to a different front: learning the endangered minority and
indigenous languages of other cultures.
