Beautiful, Futuristic Hotel Designed To Cope With Rising Sea Levels

Beautiful, Futuristic Hotel Designed To Cope With Rising Sea Levels | ArchiTexts Association Forum | Scoop.it

The Maldives may be swallowed up by rising sea levels in the future, but the architects at Deep Ocean Technology will build an underwater hotel to house its inhabitants.

Called ‘The Water Discus’, this futuristic hotel has two circular discs which will house its 22 rooms, along with a restaurant, spas and lounges.
The structure above ground will be connected to the structure below via a staircase and an elevator, where a bar and a diving center will also be located.

What an awesome idea of giving tourists/travellers an unforgettable experience as they never experienced before. Great concept, design, and ideas for this hotel, however they may need to add up the capacity in the following future to add up more than 22 rooms. Overall the facilities they offered to tourists/customers are simply great, which allow people to enjoy the view around hotel as it's located at beautiful Maldives area. Maldives is well known as a dream destination place and a must visit at least once in life. By showing this brilliant and promising idea is a greater way to attracts more people to support and visit this hotel. However a reasonable price and good service are needed to keep the hotel's reputation rising in a further future.

Phuong Nguyen's curator insight, September 16, 2014 2:19 AM

This hotel is designed to cope with rising sea levels in Maldives. The concept of the hotel is very original compares to other underwater hotels. Based on the beautiful images, I believe in the future, this hotel will attract a lot of leisure guests who want to come for new experiments. This hotel is very suitable for adventurous people who want to organise a party or conference under water. However the owner of the hotel should carefully consider the impact of this hotel on the sustainability of the ocean and the safety of the construction.

Nguyen Quang Thai's comment, October 6, 2014 9:18 AM
It is great for building undersea hotels. It is a really creative idea for giving the visitors the pretty new experiences and beautiful views. In addition, there are many activities for people such as having a wedding under the beach, swimming at the early morning or watching the sea creatures. People could also have a great sleep because of its peaceful and quiet. For the facilities, the number of rooms should be improved due to the over demand. In addition, the undersea hotels could cause the pollution for the sea environment and threating the habitant of sea creatures. Therefore, they have to have a plan to protect the environment and sea creatures. On the other hand, there are many risks for staying under sea. As some nature disasters like tsunami, storm or some hit of big creatures like shark, people could get disturb and afraid. So, they should have an alarm, for example, to ring if there is a tsunami coming or having some nets to stop the big creatures far away. Lastly, glass cleaning is really important. As people staying, they do not want to see some moss stick in the glasses. Therefore, the hoteliers should be awareness in order to use some special glasses or have a way protect the wall.

1,620 Recycled Shipping Containers to Create an Eco-friendly Cultural Landmark in Taiwan

1,620 Recycled Shipping Containers to Create an Eco-friendly Cultural Landmark in Taiwan | ArchiTexts Association Forum | Scoop.it
LOT-EK's proposal for the Taichung City Cultural Center in Taiwan calls for building the new museum and library out of 1,620 recycled shipping containers.

New York-based architecture firm LOT-EK has made a name for itself by constructing buildings from recycled shipping containers. So it did't come as much of a surprise to learn that the firm's proposal for the Taichung City Cultural Center in western Taiwan called for building the new public library and fine arts museum out of cargo containers.

What is surprising is the scale of the project -- the proposal calls for 1,620 shipping containers to create an eco-friendly cultural landmark in the bustling Taiwanese city.

Denver’s Winning Micro-Unit Proposal Has A Vertical Lawn

Denver’s Winning Micro-Unit Proposal Has A Vertical Lawn | ArchiTexts Association Forum | Scoop.it

The Mexico-based practice SAC Studio de Arquitectura y Ciudad won first place in the Denver Architectural League’s ideas competition for riverfront micro-housing.

On Friday the Denver Architectural League announced the winners of its micro-housing ideas competition. The contest solicited designs for an eight-unit building with micro-apartments that range from 250 to 375 square feet, sited on a narrow swath of riverbank in a sparse industrial neighborhood on the outskirts of downtown. The league invited architects to imagine a structure so virtuous—net-zero, built on a leftover slope of undesirable land, virtually no parking, etc.—that its inhabitants might just be theoretical figments themselves.

All in all, the competition drew 70 proposals, 25 of which came from abroad. See more at the article link.

Green Architecture: Student Designs for Low-Income, Sustainable Housing

Green Architecture: Student Designs for Low-Income, Sustainable Housing | ArchiTexts Association Forum | Scoop.it

It’s hard for homes to be green. Despite long-term energy savings, it’s even harder for low-income homes to afford upfront costs of some sustainable materials. But ecological design doesn’t have to mean more “green” from your wallet. In fact, using recycled and sustainable material, as one local project has shown, can be both economically viable and environmentally friendly.

The San Antonio Alternative Housing Corporation (SAAHC) is a nonprofit organization that provides housing and support services for low and moderate income communities in the central Texas area.  When they construct new housing units, they want to minimize up-front construction costs as well as long-term operational expenses.  They were open to exploring alternate construction techniques, but wanted an opportunity to test the viability of these options.

As it happened, Taeg Nishimoto, Associate Dean of the UTSA College of Architecture, had been working for several years to develop a program that would give architecture students experience throughout the entire process of realizing a project from conception through construction...

Reduce & Reuse some brilliant ideas and uses. Remember everything has a double edge to it. Putting it another way, almost everything has a up side and a down side. Some people can always find a negative within a positive idea.

Centerbrook Architects and Planners developed Hotchkiss Biomass Power Plant, a 16,500-square-foot structure that impresses due to its ingenious architecture and environmentally-friendly features.

The plant burns sustainably harvested wood-chips to heat 85 buildings that total 1.2 million square feet: “Designated a carbon neutral fuel by the International Panel on Climate Change, the locally sourced wood chips are the byproduct of sustainably managed forests; they replace some 150,000 gallons of imported fuel oil per year, cutting emissions overall, most dramatically sulfur dioxide by more than 90 percent“. Waste ash is collected for use as fertilizer for the neighboring vegetable gardens...

The Areopagus Residence, designed by Paravant Architects in Atenas, Costa Rica, is custom designed to be as intimately connected to the natural landscape around it as possible.  By exploiting passive heating and cooling strategies, the architects were able to design a home that does not require mechanical air conditioning systems. This also allows for uninterrupted south-facing views that open out into the landscape.

[Mies van der Rohe] Seagram: Union of Building and Landscape: Places: Design Observer

[Mies van der Rohe] Seagram: Union of Building and Landscape: Places: Design Observer | ArchiTexts Association Forum | Scoop.it

What led Mies to create the union of skyscraper and plaza on Park Avenue, a binding together so profoundly important in his oeuvre? In the 1950s, it would have been difficult to answer, let alone to ask. Would or could Mies have retraced his own trajectory? A few iconic buildings were known. The mullioned high-rise towers of the 1950s did not seem to derive from the sheer glass skyscrapers of the early 1920s. A genealogy of the plaza could not have been constructed: the “podium” at 860–880 Lake Shore Drive was not recognized as such. And Mies’s Zeitgeist? Philip Johnson proclaimed that he was tired of hearing Mies quote Augustine’s “Beauty is the radiance of truth.”

Sustainable Building - 2013 AIA Winner: 355 11th Street, San Francisco

Sustainable Building - 2013 AIA Winner: 355 11th Street, San Francisco | ArchiTexts Association Forum | Scoop.it

A COTE Top Ten Green Project outperforms expectations and earns more recognition.

Like its surrounding SoMa (South of Market) neighborhood in San Francisco, 355 11th Street is an eye-catching hybrid of old and new. And in the three years since this formerly derelict but National Register–listed plumbing warehouse was renovated into a LEED-NC Gold–certified mixed-use office building and LEED-CI Platinum–certified restaurant, it has become a community magnet.

These attributes, among many others, garnered the project an AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project designation in 2010 and, this year, the inaugural 2013 AIA COTE Plus award.

Will Mumbai's Tallest Skyscraper Be Its Greenest Too?

Will Mumbai's Tallest Skyscraper Be Its Greenest Too? | ArchiTexts Association Forum | Scoop.it

The proposed 116-story Imperial Tower will offer a slew of sustainable options.

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture‘s latest proposal for Mumbai’s tallest building—the slender 116-story, 400-meter residential Imperial Tower is designed to "confuse the wind."

This simply means that the extremely tall and thin tower will stand up to the forces of wind. Enhanced by sky gardens, designed to dampen wind eddying about the tower, the futuristic pencil-like structure will stand strong against a sudden gale.

AS+GG also designed the skyscraper to minimize its effects on climate change. Environmentally friendly features include rainwater harvesting, gray water recycling, and exterior cladding to limit solar heat gain...
