... Denmark, this thoroughly modern house draws its unique feature not from a scientific advance, but from the era of Viking sagas.

Seaweed is incorporated in three ways:

1.The exterior seaweed stuffed cylinders take the place of shingles or clapboard.

2.The algae is also used as insulation.

3.The seaweed additionally is used in the ceiling as insulation and for optimizing the acoustics in the home.

The family has sworn off sushi.....enough is enough!

just kidding......LOL

The New Seaweed House is a collaboration between architecture firm Vandkunsten and Readania Byg an organization that spends millions of dollars each year preserving Denmark’s material cultural by restoring historical properties and funding the development of new experimental designs that reflect Danish sensibilities.

Over Water by Design Workshop

Over Water by Design Workshop | Architecture and Architectural Jobs | Scoop.it

“To build on the lake surrounded by mountains is always a challenge, cause whatever one builds and however beautiful it may be it still takes away that much from nature.

The strategy then is to build a glass house perched on the land and providing privacy for the inhabitants, at the same time to make sure the lake view gets highlighted from inside for the inhabitants

The structure is wood steel and glass, supported on 2 RCC columns, perched like a bird on land.”

The relaunched RIBAJ

And here it is! Our relaunched RIBAJ! We interviewed some of the best designers in the business and selected Matt Willey, who has previously worked on magazines for the Royal Academy and the New York Times, and co-founded cross-cultural title Port magazine. Matt has worked with noted typographer Henrik Kubel on the look and legibility of the new RIBAJ typeface: we have an exclusive Kubel-drawn headings font, RIBAJ Condensed. You will find much-expanded buildings coverage at the front, and a new ‘Culture’ section at the back which brings together reviews, columnists and profile. Right at the heart of the magazine is our noted technical and practice section, ‘Intelligence’, now a registered RIBA CPD provider. Our new design is in a wider format, with better quality paper, photography and printing. As we approach our 120th anniversary in November, this is part of a broader expansion plan for the title and its associated activities, in print, online and live. Thanks to the RIBA we already have by far the biggest circulation of any UK-based architecture title, and enjoy a significant overseas audience. We hope you enjoy the regenerated RIBA Journal. And as ever, tell us what you think!

Absolutely Prefabulous: 10 Modular Homes

Absolutely Prefabulous: 10 Modular Homes | Architecture and Architectural Jobs | Scoop.it

The benefits of using prefabrication are many, and can result in beautiful homes that function just as well or better than custom ones built on site.

Using modular techniques for construction allows for stronger purchasing power. The process of building on site is also much quicker—and cheaper. Prefabrication is also greener since it uses computer technology to manufacture the modules, which creates 50% to 75% less material waste. The one limitation of prefabrication is that the pieces of the home need to be able to be shipped from the factory to the site of assembly.

But the benefits of prefabrication are many, and can result in beautiful homes that function just as well or better than custom ones built on site.

Check out these 10 examples of prefab architecture at the link.
