Hammer & Nail Pointillism: Stunning Portraits by David Foster

Hammer & Nail Pointillism: Stunning Portraits by David Foster | Architecture and Architectural Jobs | Scoop.it

We’ve seen some pretty impressive examples of classic pointillism, and now we are pleased to bring you these hammer & nail stippling works by David Foster. Using thousands of nails hammered to a canvas, he varies the solidity and shading to create stunning portraits of celebrities, animals, and of course, a hammer and nail!

The level of realism Foster achieves with the nails is unbelievable and it has taken several years to master his technique. Each piece begins with a photograph, which Foster reproduces in ink by meticulously stippling every contour. Then he enlarges the drawing to see where the nails should go, and starts hammering away.

A Prefab Timber-framed Bioclimatic House by Tectoniques Architects

A Prefab Timber-framed Bioclimatic House by Tectoniques Architects | Architecture and Architectural Jobs | Scoop.it
This "bioclimatic" house in France features a timber frame, larch and composite timber cladding, and a planted roof.

Lyon architects Tectoniques introduced a range of measures to maximise the environmental and thermal performance of the house -called Villa B - along a north-south axis, with plenty of glazing on the south facade helping with solar gain. The house is built using dry construction methods and features a prefabricated modular timber frame built on a concrete slab with larch cladding covering the exterior...

This home is fantastic. I found the description of the details of the build informative and interesting, giving me insight into the thought process that determines interior and exterior materials, the biorclimactic approach and more. Awesome images of the interior and exterior.

Architects' fee levels tipped for recovery

Architects' fee levels tipped for recovery | Architecture and Architectural Jobs | Scoop.it
Construction growth could spark rise in fees

Architects’ fees are expected to increase in the coming year despite having fallen slightly in the last 12 months, according to research by the Fees Bureau.

The organisation has published its latest annual fees survey which shows a slight reduction in fee levels since 2012. However, overall fees are still higher than in 2010 and 2011, while sectors including offices and education have seen an increase.

Vince Nacey, director at the Fees Bureau, said increased construction activity in the last six months could lead to an increase in fee levels in the coming months.

“I think it’s a positive story,” he said. “In terms of construction activity, all our research is pointing in the right direction. Fees have been under pressure for quite a while. I’m hopeful that pressure will start to lift over the next 12 months. We’re seeing architects get more confident and think about increasing their fees.

“The first half of the year was pretty grim and the second half has been better. We’re still not out of the woods yet but lots of our research is pointing in the right direction.”

The report’s optimistic outlook chimes with the most recent RIBA Future Trends survey which showed the first annual increase in architects’ workloads in four years. Practices reported an 11% increased in work in progress in the 12 months to October this year,

The report also found that architects’ average hourly rates have increased in certain staffing categories including sole principals and senior architects with more than five years’ experience. Rates for junior architects remained the same.

RIBA Future Trends Survey reaches highest level since survey began

RIBA Future Trends Survey reaches highest level since survey began | Architecture and Architectural Jobs | Scoop.it

The RIBA Future Trends Workload Index sustained a further significant increase this month, rising to +35 in October 2013 from +26 in September 2013. This is the highest balance figure for our key workload forecast index since we started the RIBA Future Trends Survey in January 2009, and suggesting an aggregate upturn in project enquiries this autumn. Our practices are increasingly optimistic about their medium term future work flows.

Of even greater significance is that our quarterly returns for the levels of actual work in progress are now showing an annual increase for the first time since the financial crisis, suggesting that an extremely challenging and drawn out recession in the market for architectural services is finally coming to an end. Our practices reported an 11% aggregate increase in workload between October 2012 and October 2013. We estimate though that overall architects’ workloads are about one third below the peak of early 2008, so there remains a huge amount of lost territory to make up. We will be monitoring closely to see if this growth is maintained when we next ask for quarterly work in progress figures in January 2014.

Exhibition | 10x10 : London free public exhibition of the artwork will be held from 22nd November to 28th November 2013 at the Crossing, 1 Granary Square, N1C 4AA

Exhibition | 10x10 : London free public exhibition of the artwork will be held from 22nd November to 28th November 2013 at the Crossing, 1 Granary Square, N1C 4AA | Architecture and Architectural Jobs | Scoop.it

Each year, 100 participants come together in the summer to create 100 pieces of work, giving 100 perspectives of London, which are then exhibited and auctioned in November. Previous participants have included Lord Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and Grand Designs’ Kevin McCloud. The project is a unique concept, with the designers and artists producing wonderful pieces of artwork inspired by the environment they help to create and shape, as well as providing a commentary and critique on the constantly changing landscape of central London.

Every year 10×10 captures a different area of the city. This year the project will focus on East London, an area encompassing striking and innovative examples of architecture, both traditional and modern. In the shadow of the ‘Gherkin’, this area encompasses modern developments, many associated with the ‘Silicon roundabout’, to historic landmarks such as Brick Lane and the Boundary estate – one of the city’s earliest social housing schemes. East London is a truly diverse area, both culturally and creatively, where our 10×10 artists will have no problem seeking influence for their work.

During mid November, a public exhibition of the work will be held, followed by an auction of the artwork by Sotheby’s. This auction will be an exclusive event taking place during the week of the 18th of November at a central London location. All proceeds of the sale go to Article 25, the charity that builds solutions to global problems.

This year’s 10×10 will raise money for Article 25’s Street Children Centers, starting with projects in Ghana and Kenya. Over the next year, we will be helping to provide the necessary infrastructure for enabling children who live on the streets to get back to their families or foster families, schools and communities.
