Is Installation Art Actually Architecture? - Explore, Collect and Source architecture & interiors

Is Installation Art Actually Architecture? - Explore, Collect and Source architecture & interiors | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

The connection between architecture and other forms of art has long been a topic of discussion, particularly among architects seeking to prove that their trade is more than just a technical exercise. And though architecture and art forms like painting and sculpture seem more distant than ever, that was not always the case; for most of recorded history, architecture was a prime site for the display of sculpture and painting, and even after the modernist revolution, architecture was explored as a device for framing works of art, as seen in the collages of Mies van der Rohe. Generally speaking, the following definitions were accepted: sculpture is object-form that is uninhabitable, while architecture is object-form that is inhabitable

On Parametricism - A Dialogue between Neil Leach and Patrik Schumacher

In this interview Patrik Schumacher defends Parametricism as the global style for the 21st Century, conceived in the great lineage of epochal styles like Renaissance, Baroque and Modernism. It is defined and argued for on the basis of its results rather than in terms of its adopted techniques. The renewed concept of style is defended as factor in the formation and promotion of the global movement of Parametricism. The task is posed of advancing Parametricism from avant-garde hegemony to mainstream hegemony. To achieve this Parametricism is grounded in a general theory of architecture  - the theory of architectural autopoiesis -  which in turn is grounded in a general theory of society, namely Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. This theory understands society as a system of communications. Accordingly all architectural design is communication design. Under the heading of ‘parametric semiology’ this conception can be operationalized via the integration of agent based crowd modeling into the design process.

AA Landscape Urbanism "Social Waterscapes" 2011-12

"The Social Waterscapes Project investigates the role of water infrastructures within the city as a medium to improve social life. In the context of Chinese rapid urbanisation, we explore the potential of water as an instrument of modernisation. [...] The Masterplan aims to integrate the existing  urban pattern of the villages, recognizing and establishing them as cores of the cultural identity of the new city. [...] The relationship between water and people becomes the crucial driver for all the decisions in designing the city."

Social waterscapes is the design thesis of Jaime Traspaderne, Ana Abram and Costanza Madricardo at the Architectural Association within the Landscape Urbanism Programme 2011/2012.
