New St. Petersburg Pier | Mesh Architecture & BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) - Arch2O.com

New St. Petersburg Pier | Mesh Architecture & BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) - Arch2O.com | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

It is amazing how something so everyday and recognizable as a loop-dee-loop can amaze and inspire us. Just a subtle change makes all the difference, no longer is it the straw wrapping that we play with rather than discard, not is is become something. Now it’s heavy duty, and it’s more real to us- understandable, straw wrappings get thrown out, we usually only throw out buildings that were built in the ’70s.

The firm Mesh Architecture collaborated with BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) for this competition entry, titled Wave Pier, to design the new St. Petersburg Pier in St. Petersburg, Florida. Below is the description given of the project by Mesh Architecture. Enjoy!

Aggregated Porosity Canopy: Digital Architecture Laboratory

Aggregated Porosity Canopy: Digital Architecture Laboratory | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

This summer, Hunan University’s School of Architecture sponsored the Digital Architecture Laboratory (DAL), a workshop created to bring architects and students together to explore digital fabrication techniques. Hosted in Changsha, China, the workshop was led by Biao Hu, a professor with the university, and Yu Du, an architect with Zaha Hadid Architects. Suryansh Chandra, also with Zaha Hadid Architects, and Shuojiong Zhang, ofUNstudio, were invited to participate as tutors for the workshop, which with a theme of “aggregated porosity” would explore variations in material density and the juxtaposition of solid forms with skeletal ones. Additionally, the project had to be a structure that provided shade and fit within an approximately 10-by-10-by-20-foot area.

New Balance 3D Printed Shoes Can Run In Races - PSFK

New Balance 3D Printed Shoes Can Run In Races - PSFK | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

Further research tells us that 3D printing and using such precise customisation is only the beginning. This process in comparison with standard manufacturing means not only lower costs but also a significant decrease in lead times. What would take a week, now can take hours, and this also gives researchers more time to play around with ideas as they can instantly print prototypes based on the runner’s strategy for a particular race to be trialled and tested, further increasing the product’s potential.

New Balance CEO Robert DeMartini told wired.com, “3-D printing unlocks an entirely new level of design, allowing us to elevate design within the company to ensure we bring consumers the best in both performance and design.”

The shoes aren’t available for consumers just yet but variations in designs based upon weight, running style and cushioning preference are already in talks and may well be on a shelf near you in the not so distant future.

Saint Petersburg Zoological Park | TN Plus & Beckmann N’Thépé

Saint Petersburg Zoological Park | TN Plus & Beckmann N’Thépé | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

Thousands and thousands of years ago the surface of the earth was but one supercontinent known as Pangea. Ecosystems once linked with others are today kept apart by oceans and seas after being broken into splinters. From this separation we have developed different cultures and unique environments that have defined the way we live. Yet in our search for knowledge and entertainment one of the few things that unite these worlds can be found within zoos were we can interact and observe animals that are not indigenous to where we live.

Bohlin Cywinski Jackson’s Tree Canopy

Bohlin Cywinski Jackson’s Tree Canopy | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

It all started with a beech tree that has lived for the past hundred years on the Colombiere Jesuit Brother’s bucolic 14-acre site in Baltimore, MD.  The tree stands in plain view of the brothers’ new chapel, designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (BCJ). Alfred Dragani, an associate with the firm and the lead on the project, said that “as our Jesuit clients expressed a greater desire for privacy, we began to study ways of designing a shroud behind the south and north facing glass walls of the chapel that would operate like light-modulating screens. Our hope was that we could simulate the effect of an actual tree canopy, resulting in a dappled and serene light.” Dragani and his team used digital modeling (Rhino and Grasshopper) to simulate daylight conditions in the chapel throughout the year and create an interior installation in the chapel made from perforated wood panels in an organic arrangement of overlapping planes within a repetitive steel framework.

A/N Blog . Aidlin Darling’s Ribbed Canopy

A/N Blog . Aidlin Darling’s Ribbed Canopy | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

Wexler’s refined spin on farm-to-table barbecue in San Francisco’s financial district offers guests an authentically char-grilled dining experience, minus the smoldering cinders. Inspired by its progressive grill menu, local multidisciplinary firm Aidlin Darling Design dreamed up a 46-foot-long billowing ceiling canopy that hovers over the dining room like a plume of smoke. The feature also extends to the exterior, doubling as an awning over the main entrance that beckons passersby.

“The original design, based on an undulating plane of smoke, was designed in both AutoCad andRhino, [using the] lofting feature that extrapolates geometry between two curves,” said Adrienne Swiatocha, project architect for Aidlin Darling Design. The canopy’s softly curving profiles at the exterior and at the end of the wall were hand-drawn. The architects used Rhino to amplify and adjust these curves throughout the center portion of the canopy. This varying amplitude echoes the way smoke dissipates across a room. “[Then], we sliced the three dimensional plane every few inches to generate a bunch of curved line profiles, and offset it by 5 inches to create a second, curving, thickened line.”

The Architectural Ellipsis at Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco in Mexico City is a project by Ruth Estévez and Javier Toscano. It “explores the possibility of thinking through the consequences of an architectural reason that wants to go beyond both the ordering subjectivity of its creators, producers and critics, and the entire sphere of discourse that constitutes it.“ (excerpt from the exhibition text). The artists participating are Esteban Azuela, Tania Candiani, Jordi Colomer, Democracia, Jimmie Durham, Larissa Fassler, Luca Frei, León Ferrari, Enrique Ježik, José Jiménez Ortiz, Mark Manders, Matt Mullican, Erik Olofsen, Clarisa Tossin and Anri Sala.
