Floating London airport proposal by Gensler

Floating London airport proposal by Gensler | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

Architecture firm Gensler have released a conceptual proposal for a new floating airport for London, located in the Thames Estuary with terminals connected by underwater tunnels.

Unlike previous concepts for a new London airport, including last year's proposal by Foster + Partners, Gensler's plans do not involve pouring earth into the river for land reclamation. Instead, "we're going to float the scheme on giant platforms," explains Ian Mulcahey, the firm's global head of planning.

Arnhem Central - Transfer Hall by UNStudio
Dragoș Milotin's insight:

The Transfer hall is the central piece of the Arnhem Central Masterplan, linking different programmes and levels. The building shelters the facilities and waiting areas for the trains, trolley buses and bus station, as well as commercial areas and a conference centre, and serves as the linking hub between these transportation modes, the city centre, the Coehoorn area, the parking garage and the office plaza.

Syros House by Myrto Miliou - Ronen Bekerman 3d architectural visualization blog

Syros House by Myrto Miliou - Ronen Bekerman 3d architectural visualization blog | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

It’s very hot in here now. Feels like the middle of summer, and I’m working on a design using mostly rough stones, so I’m thinking the Syros House by Myrto Miliou Architects will be a perfect inspirational fit to share with you all. It sure did inspire me today! The photos have very good stone detail in them and a strong feel of hot summer (seems to me they were treated to accentuate that). I find myself drawn towards this type of “earthy” architecture more and more lately. feels cosy.

4 Lines of Architecture | Matt Davis – Arch2O - Arch2O.com

4 Lines of Architecture | Matt Davis – Arch2O - Arch2O.com | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

This is the thesis, created and executed by me, Matt Davis, for my B.Arch from Virginia Tech. It is entitled 4 Lines of Architecture. The pictures you see are pictures taken of a 3/8 inch=1 foot model constructed of soldered copper wire of differing gauges. The largest gauge- that of the lines is representative of 4 inch tube steel.

The thesis began with the breaking down of the ‘primitive hut’ into four basic building components- Floor, Stair, Window, and Enclosure. The four elements were each assigned a line. Each of these four is a form-giver to the construct, which is an observation post for Meteor Crater in Arizona, USA. The kicker is that each element has to look back to its line- no matter where it happens to be in the section (top, bottom, left, right)- for its support and structure. If the line is on the top, then perhaps it is hung; on the side? Then there’s a cantilever to deal with.

Why Clothing Is The Next Frontier Of Responsive Computing ⚙ Co.Labs ⚙ code + community

Why Clothing Is The Next Frontier Of Responsive Computing ⚙ Co.Labs ⚙ code + community | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

Talk of an Apple watch has created an intimacy problem for personal technology. “What happens when it jumps outside of the computer screen and becomes part of our body?” says Daan Roosegaarde, who runs the eponymous design studio in the Netherlands. “Indeed, what kind of new protocol or rituals will we have, if things like this become part of our new default?”

Roosegaarde is the creator of the conceptual Intimacy 2.0 dress, the getup that made news in February by initiating a transformation into transparency when the wearer gets hot and bothered. He wants to draw a line in the sand between “interactive” technology--the kind that keeps us glued to screens--and a more passive kind of garment that reflects your state of mind by changing color or shape.

Reading Between the Lines / Gijs Van Vaerenbergh

Reading Between the Lines / Gijs Van Vaerenbergh | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

‘Reading between the lines’ is a project by the duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs (Leuven, 1983) and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh (Leuven, 1983). Since 2007, they have been realizing projects in public space together that start from their architectural background, but have an artistic intention. Their projects do not always originate out of the initiative of a classical client, for example, and carry a large degree of autonomy. Their primary concerns are experiment, reflection, a physical involvement with the end result and the input of the viewer.

Development corporation ADIM Nord with MVRDV and de Alzua+ have been announced the winners of an urban renewal competition in the French town of Villeneuve d’Ascq, beating four other entries. The masterplan for a crucial site in the town centre adjacent to an inner city motorway, is the starting point of a wider regeneration of the area’s public space. An iconic building, The Beam, will hover over the motorway signalling urban renewal and acting as visual reference point for the town’s centre. A hotel, offices and retail space, totalling 15.000 m2, will be built on the site of a former petrol station, with construction expected to start in 2015.

designcoding | Use of Analytical Visuals: Revisiting Villa Savoye

designcoding | Use of Analytical Visuals: Revisiting Villa Savoye | ARCHIresource | Scoop.it

This presentation was completed in 2007, as a part of a research project titled “Analytical Visuals in Architectural Design Studio”. We decided to use Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye as our actor, trying lots of different visual effects and techniques to understand and to express it’s fundamental design principles. Below are some of the elements we used in the project: some renders and panoramas along with a small video experiment. Modeling was based on various models and technical drawings of the building found around internet, and changing / modifying / re-modeling parts of them to meet our purposes regarding details, level of abstraction and overall quality visual perception.
