Jung, Synchronicity, And Human Destiny

Jung, Synchronicity, And Human Destiny | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it

Synchronicity refers to the underlying cosmic intelligence that synchronizes people, places and events into a meaningful order. We experience synchronicity when an outer event corresponds to our inner thoughts, perceptions or feelings. - Law of Time

Carl Jung is the Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist that founded “analytical psychology,” as well as the extravert and introvert psychological types.

Analytical psychology focuses on the whole of the human being, believing that the unconscious mind is the primary source for healing and is vital to the development of an individual’s soul. Unlike many psychologists and scientists, Jung believed the world of dreams, myth, and folklore, should be...(click title for more)

Tyranny Is Tyranny Whether It Comes in Red Coats or Blue Pin Stripes

Tyranny Is Tyranny Whether It Comes in Red Coats or Blue Pin Stripes | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
My fellow Americans of the 21st Century are complacent about our liberty. Just as the Anglicans seeped into the Catholic Colony of Maryland, and kept pushing Catholics out, tyranny morphs and finds its way to subjugate humanity. Few Marylanders could tell you whether their ancestors fought on the side of the Revolution or the side of the Crown in the American Revolution. All that has washed away by time. But those loyalists to tyranny who stayed must have changed their tune after 1783, and we wouldn't know who their descendants are today.

But tyranny we can recognize, and today it comes in grey flannel and blue pin stripes, and is headquartered on Wall Street. There venal investment bankers concoct the most convoluted schemes to separate the rest of us from our life's savings. Since 2008, they have pulled off the biggest public theft in the history of history.

Why Guns Have a Powerful Hold On the American Psyche

Why Guns Have a Powerful Hold On the American Psyche | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
In my vision of a perfect world, there would be no guns. Yet wishing can't take away the fact that guns are a powerful presence in American life -- and an equally potent symbol in the American psyche. In search of an outside perspective, I turned to Italian Jungian psychoanalyst Luigi Zoja. Author of many books that have been translated into twelve languages, including Violence in History, Culture, and the Psyche, Zoja brings history, anthropology and psychology to bear on contemporary issues. The following is an edited and condensed version of our conversation.

What Do Dreams Have to Do with "Real" Life? Part One

What Do Dreams Have to Do with "Real" Life? Part One | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
If you’ve never thought of dreams as having any relevance to your waking life, I can assure you, they do. This one which came at a pivotal time in my life convinced me beyond any doubt that some unimaginable, unconscious Mystery which dwelled both within and outside me knew what was going on in my conscious life and had something to tell me about it. I’ll share the dream in this post and comment on it in the next.

What Does the Christian Right Want? Chris Hedges on American Fascists

What Does the Christian Right Want? Chris Hedges on American Fascists | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America is a non-fiction book by American Pulitzer Prize journalist Chris Hedges, published in January 2007. Hedges is a former seminary student with a master's degree in divinity from Harvard and was a long-time foreign correspondent for The New York Times.

Publishers Weekly wrote of the book: "As a Harvard Divinity School graduate, his investigation of the Christian Right agenda is even more alarming given its lucidity. Citing the psychology and sociology of fascism and cults, including the work of German historian Fritz Stern, Hedges draws striking parallels between 20th-century totalitarian movements and the highly organized, well-funded 'dominionist movement,' an influential theocratic sect within the country's huge evangelical population. Rooted in a radical Calvinism, and wrapping its apocalyptic, vehemently militant, sexist and homophobic vision in patriotic and religious rhetoric, dominionism seeks absolute power in a Christian state. Hedges's reportage profiles both former members and true believers, evoking the particular characteristics of this American variant of fascism. His argument against what he sees as a democratic society's suicidal tolerance for intolerant movements has its own paradoxes. But this urgent book forcefully illuminates what many across the political spectrum will recognize as a serious and growing threat to the very concept and practice of an open society."

I’d like to tell you about a particularly potent form of inner work that helped my daughter achieve her career goals. Julie was at Florida State University (Go Noles!) working on her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy when the time came to write her dissertation. Suddenly, the psychic energy that had served her so well for so long hit a wall. The challenge before her seemed so daunting that she became immersed in a dark swamp of inertia. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t get started and it seemed as if she might never bring closure to years of hard work.

Did you ever have something that generated feelings of pride and shame simultaneously, depending on your viewpoint? Something you wanted to share but also wanted to hold close? Something good you didn’t trust to others? I remember a friend who grew up in a northern California Pomo family telling me that her grandmother instructed her never to teach basketry to non-Indians, because they would not use the knowledge for good. Whether you agree or not, you know what she was talking about, right?

The Metaphoric Mean of Dreams

The Metaphoric Mean of Dreams | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
Dreams symbolically represent underlying truths of which we are unaware. Dream events, like those in fairy tales, fables, myths and films have allegorical, metaphorical meanings. Rarely are they meant to be taken literally.

For example, in my early years of dreamwork I had many dreams about touring an unsuitable new house we were building. In waking reality I had designed the house we lived in and never wanted to leave, so I knew these dreams didn’t mean we would move into a new house I would hate. Then what did they mean?

Global Police State Calls for Globalization of Dissent and Protest | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
A report from The International Network of Civil Liberties Organizations presents alarming case studies of protest suppression and criminalization of political and social dissent around the world. Ironically, the name of the report, “Take Back the Streets,” came from an order from Toronto’s police commander to his force in June 2010, when more than 100,000 Canadians took to the street to protest the G20 summit. Despite the fact that the anti-G20 summit were peaceful, within 36 hours, more than a 1,000 people — protesters and journalists alike — were arrested and detained.

Defying Male Oppression With Women’s Laughter

Defying Male Oppression With Women’s Laughter | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
In Turkey, women are truly worried about the future. One reason for this is that those who rule the country — rather than solving real problems such as stemming the rise in violence against women, finding solutions for female homicide or generating employment for women — are limiting their political engagement with women to issues regarding their bodies and chastity so as to turn women into puppets obedient to male discourse. Here is what Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinca said in a recent speech: “Chastity is so important. It is not simply a word. It glorifies both men and women. She will be chaste. Man should be chaste too. He should not be unfaithful. He should be bound to his wife. He should love his children. The woman will know what is and what is not haram. She will not laugh in public. She will not be alluring. She will protect her state of chastity.” This is one of many examples that show the extent to which women are being used as political material, and it was an inspiration for my poem below.

If They Give You Lined Paper, Write the Other Way

If They Give You Lined Paper, Write the Other Way | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
While I have some mixed emotions about the “Anonymous Movement,” one of their points I agree with entirely. That is the thought that, “You can’t kill an idea!” Once an idea comes into the public consciousness, it stays there. It can morph and evolve into something else, and it can take very many tangents from its original purpose, but once conscious, always conscious.

This was a point Dr. Carl Jung made, when he was talking about bringing psychic realities into consciousness. He observed that by the end of the 19th Century, Christianity had relegated Satan to a scary fairy tale, rather than the manifestation of Evil in the world. But after the two world wars produced their bloody results, there could be no denying that Satan visited death and destruction upon mankind, and had very nearly won. What would our lives be like today, if Nazi Germany, Mussolini’s Italy, and Imperial Japan had won World War II?

The Power of Your Creative Force

The Power of Your Creative Force | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
“Did you not see that when your creative force turned to the world, how the dead things moved under it and through it, how they grew and prospered, and how your thoughts flowed in rich rivers? If your creative force now turns to the place of the soul, you will see how your soul becomes green and how its field bears wonderful fruit.” ~ Carl Jung. The Red Book. Page 236.
Skip_Conover's insight:

What a beautiful piece, Jean.  It rings true to me.  I intend to republish it shortly.  I would like to share with you my personal experience.  During the decade of the 1990s something in me definitely wanted to have voice.  I expressed it in many ways, but starting in 1995 I began painting.  I wasn't a particularly successful artist, although some of my pieces are prized by friends and family.  The important point is that I noticed along the way that whenever I was actively painting, the rest of my life began to simply work better.  If I stopped painting, my life didn't work as well.  Based on that, I believe you can do practically anything, and you will find that the unconscious will start to help your life change for the better.

What Do Dreams Have to Do with "Real" Life? Part Two

What Do Dreams Have to Do with "Real" Life? Part Two | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
Last time I shared a dream from over 20 years ago titled “Two Snakes in the Tree of Life.” So what did that dream have to do with “real” life? Dreams ARE real life. They happen to everyone, even some animals. They are facts. We do not make them up. They come from a place beyond Ego’s control: the unconscious. Our unawareness of the unconscious does not negate its reality; each dream proves its existence. When we trust it and explore its nightly dramas, ordinary life is transformed into the greatest adventure of all: living our own myth.

Fight Censorship - See This Film

Fight Censorship - See This Film | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
In April of 2013, Tia Lessin and Carl Deal's film "Citizen Koch" died an untimely death. The film had sought to illustrate the role of Koch money in American electoral politics. But the very day after the "Citizen Koch" played at the Wisconsin Film Festival, public television funding was pulled in order to placate the right wingers who were the subject of the film.

The Koch Brothers were already smarting from a negative portrayal in award-winning documentary director Alex Gibney's "Park Avenue." As Jane Mayer documents in The New Yorker ("A Word From Our Sponsor: Public Television's Attempts to Placate David Koch," May 27, 2013), WNET President Neal Shapiro had warned PBS Board trustee and donor David Koch before Gibney's film was screened. He also allowed Koch Industries to air a disclaimer after the film, which called the film "disappointing and divisive."

Splitting, Integration and Evolution in the Mother Archetype

Splitting, Integration and Evolution in the Mother Archetype | Archetype in Action | Scoop.it
Recently, I have been writing on the aims and instincts of the human soul. Carl Jung speaks of the human soul’s “longing to attain rebirth through a return to the womb, and to become immortal like the sun” (para. 312). In biblical terms rebirth is associated with entrance into Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the holy city, as image of the holy mother.

Jung says, “the Old Testament treats the cities of Jerusalem, Babylon, etc. just as if they were women” (para 303). While Jerusalem is an image of the holy mother, Babylon is the unholy mother. In Jung’s words: “Babylon is the symbol of the Terrible Mother” (para 315).
