While new technologies increasingly provide more sophisticated methods of measuring and illustrating artefacts there is still no adequate replacement for traditional pottery drawings. The visual documentation of shape and form retains a key place in publication and comparative research. Individual illustrators use a variety of tools and techniques to mark out the profiles of pottery — often combining the skills of a contortionist and a juggler to simultaneously manage set-square, ruler, pencil and the vessel itself. In this brief note we describe a simple, effective tool which has proved fast, efficient and accurate in preparing outline pencil drawings of large assemblages of medium-sized vessels and ground-stone tools, with a considerable saving of time and effort (
Pyramids 3D app lets you fly across the Giza plateau with 360° views of The Great Pyramid, The Sphinx and the rest of the ancient complex. It gives aspiring explorers and armchair travellers an equally fulfilling way to sample one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. But it’s once you enter the tombs that the app really comes into its own.
Every inch of the network of passages has been rendered from real photographs; even the tunnels closed to real visitors are included. There’s a small HUD and flashlight indicator to show your direction of travel. Scroll around with one finger and tap to move forward down the passages. You begin to feel like a real explorer, but the somewhat creepy soundtrack is a little off putting. These are peaceful places where the pharaohs ascended to the gods, after all, not scenes from The Mummy!

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who came along to our session on Open Source Software for Archaeology at the Scotlands Community Heritage Conference at Birnam.
What a fantastic weekend! For those of you who didn't make it or missed out on the pre-loaded data sticks, here's what we gave out. Please feel free to take our documents and use as you please - distribute, remix and share with others. Apologies for the jumbo file sizes - zipped folders are a rather inelegant solution - I shall endeavour to improve on this and add more content and advice notes over the coming weeks. Both PC's and Macs have built in Zip support so you should be able to open them by double clicking on the file once it's downloaded. Alternatively, you could use 7zip or Winzip's trial software for PC's or try Stuffit for Mac. Have fun!
Inside and outside digital calipers for archaeological illustrators and finds specialists...
The outside callipers have a span in excess of 239 mm and the inside callipers in excess of 257 mm, with what we are assured an accuracy of 0.01mm. The moulded knife shaped handles are ribbed for grip and the callipers manipulated by the use of a finger trigger.
Brilliant when taking a reading and then just click hold... no more remembering a measurement or losing it when you pull the caliper out of a pot. you can even just read it straight off the digital lcd panel.
If you are serious about what you do. This will save time and make recording easier. We are proud to bring this revolution to you!
Osteoware is an easy to learn software program designed to assist in the documentation of human skeletal remains. It provides for the real-time data entry of quantitative and qualitative observations into a structured query language (SQL) relational database. When the database is established on a networked server up to five individuals may enter data at the same time, though not on the same record.
