Madison Mayor Paul Soglin orders removal of Confederate monuments in Forest Hill Cemetery | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
Madison Mayor Paul Soglin has ordered the removal of publicly owned monuments to Confederate soldiers at the Forest Hill Cemetery. The decision aligns with similar ones throughout the country to remove statues and monuments dedicated to the Confederacy after a violent protest involving neo-Nazis and white supremacists in Virginia left three people dead over the weekend. A plaque at the Confederate Rest section of the public cemetery describes how the 140 soldiers ended buried in Wisconsin after surrendering in a battle and being taken to Camp Randall.

Trump defends Confederate statues: Here are 1,500 symbols of the Confederacy in the US | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
Washington (CNN)As a growing number of American cities worked to remove statues commemorating the Confederacy, President Donald Trump defended the statues again Thursday, arguing that removing them uproots American "culture" and history. "Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments," he said in a series of tweets. "You........can't change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson - who's next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also......the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!" Defending the

A caged brown bear has bitten off the arm of a 'drunk' man who tried to feed the animal at a Russian roadside cafe.  Andrey Sakharovsky, 42, was rushed to hospital after the terrifying incident, which occurred in Siberia's Irkutsk region. Staff had sold Mr Sakharovsky cans of condensed milk in order to feed the three brown bears kept by the cafe to attract customers. CCTV footage shows Mr Sakharovsky clambering over a fence to reach the cage followed by screams of terror - he was passing the cans through the bars when one of the bears grabbed his arm. Mr Sakharovsky was instantly heard by cafe staff who ran to his aid. The cafe's chef, Gabil Guseinov, used a shovel to push the bear away and get

During the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend, Vice News Tonight correspondent Elle Reeve embedded herself with the neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other alt-right participants, and her documentary of the melee is pretty intense. On Wednesday night, CNN's Anderson Cooper had Reeve on to talk about her documentary and what she saw, in the light of President Trump's less-than-robust criticism of white supremacists on Tuesday. She said the most striking thing about the "Unite the Right" activities was how well-organized they were. "Everyone who was there knew exactly what they were signing up for," Reeve said. So, Cooper asked, "when the president says that there

WARSAW, Poland –  The memorial site of Auschwitz-Birkenau appears to have weighed in on the debate over U.S. President Donald Trump's response to the outpouring of anti-Semitic and racially charged hatred in Charlottesville, Virginia. The state museum wrote Thursday on Twitter: "One of the hardest lessons for us today. Perpetrators were people. They accepted an ideology that rationalized and promoted hatred & evil." Beneath the words is a photo of Auschwitz officers and guards smiling and having fun. The message was posted in several languages two days after Trump made comments which appeared to rationalize the actions of neo-Nazis and white supremacists who marched in Virginia. I Went to the University of Virginia. We Don't Need Statues to Remember our History

I Went to the University of Virginia. We Don't Need Statues to Remember our History | Culture Curator | Scoop.it
I remember the day I saw the plaque. I was walking back to my dorm late one night during my second year at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Slightly hidden among the pathway was a sign that indicated I was standing on a slave cemetery. I turned to my friends and said "Oh my God, y'all. We are sleeping on the bodies of slaves." As crazy and jarring as that realization was, it was also not something that was abnormal at UVa. After all, the school was founded by Thomas Jefferson, a brilliant man who helped found this country—and a slave owner. The complicated story of UVa, Charlottesville, Virginia, and the South is the story of America. That is why the events that unfolded in Charlottesville

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A Ku Klux Klan group's request to burn a cross atop Stone Mountain in Georgia has been denied. The Stone Mountain Memorial Association on Monday rejected the application from the Sacred Knights of the Ku Klux Klan to hold an Oct. 21 "lighting" ceremony. The application was submitted May 26. The ceremony was proposed to commemorate a November 1915 cross burning on top of Stone Mountain that marked the KKK's revival. Crosses were burned there annually, decades ago. A Stone Mountain Memorial Association statement says it condemns the beliefs and actions of the KKK and that its rules allow for the denial of a permit for an event that would disrupt park activities or "appears

White House chief strategist Steve Bannon defended his controversial interview with a liberal magazine Thursday, saying it took the focus off of President Trump following his remarks on the violence in Charlottesville, Va., and shifted the media's narrative. Bannon had a wide-ranging discussion with a writer for the American Prospect, a liberal magazine, during which he said there was no "military solution" to North Korea's nuclear development, and that "they got us." During the conversation, which Bannon said he didn't know was on-the-record, the White House chief strategist said "the economic war with China is everything." But in an interview with the Daily Mail on Thursday, Bannon said his
