U.S. 'deeply concerned' by North Korean nuclear advances

U.S. 'deeply concerned' by North Korean nuclear advances | Archaeology, Culture, Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
By David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is "deeply concerned" about North Korea's nuclear advances, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday after a U.S. research institute predicted Pyongyang could possess as many as 100 nuclear weapons within five years. Sung Kim, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy, told a Washington seminar he could not comment on findings presented earlier by experts at the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, because he had not seen the report and U.S. government assessments were classified. Experts at the U.S.-Korea Institute presented three scenarios for North Korea’s future nuclear stockpile, which they estimated currently amount to 10-16 weapons.

Texas man convicted in killing of 'American Sniper'

Texas man convicted in killing of 'American Sniper' | Archaeology, Culture, Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
After deliberating for less than three hours, jurors unanimously rejected claims from Eddie Ray Routh, 27, that he was not guilty on grounds of insanity when he killed famed sniper Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield at a Texas shooting range in February 2013. Kyle and Littlefield were killed after Routh's mother asked the Navy SEAL veteran to help her son with post-traumatic stress disorder, the Post said. Littlefield, a father of one, was hit seven times, including four that would have been instantly fatal, according to court testimony. Judy Littlefield, the mother of Chad Littlefield, made a brief statement late Tuesday after the verdict.

U.S. won't file charges against George Zimmerman in Trayvon Martin death

U.S. won't file charges against George Zimmerman in Trayvon Martin death | Archaeology, Culture, Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
By Julia Edwards WASHINGTON (Reuters) - George Zimmerman will not face civil rights charges in the death of Trayvon Martin, the U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday, ending its probe three years after the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer fatally shot the unarmed black teenager. The department said it had not found sufficient evidence that Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder in state court, intentionally violated the civil rights of Martin, 17. The decision comes as the Obama administration faces pressure from civil rights activists to press charges in other high-profile deaths that have raised allegations of racial bias. The Justice Department is investigating a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, who shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, and the New York City police officer involved in the chokehold death of Eric Garner, another unarmed black man.

Britain becomes first nation to legalize three-parent babies

Britain becomes first nation to legalize three-parent babies | Archaeology, Culture, Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
By Kate Kelland LONDON (Reuters) - - Britain will become the first nation to legalize a "three-parent" IVF technique which doctors say can prevent some inherited incurable diseases but which critics fear will effectively lead to "designer babies". The treatment, called mitochondrial transfer, is known as "three-parent" in vitro fertilization (IVF) because the babies, born from genetically modified embryos, would have DNA from a mother, a father and from a female donor. Although the techniques are still at the research stage in laboratories in Britain and the United States, experts say that now legal hurdles have been overcome, Britain's first 3-parent baby could be born as early as 2016. Mitochondrial transfer involves intervening in the fertilization process to remove faulty mitochondrial DNA, which can cause inherited conditions such as heart problems, liver failure, brain disorders, blindness and muscular dystrophy.

US condemns IS jihadist kidnap of Christians in Syria

US condemns IS jihadist kidnap of Christians in Syria | Archaeology, Culture, Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
The United States has condemned the abduction by the Islamic State group of dozens of Assyrian Christians in Syria and demanded their immediate release. It was the first mass kidnapping of Christians in the war-torn country. The abduction of at least 90 Christians appeared to be in retaliation for a major Kurdish offensive aimed at recapturing nearby villages, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Tuesday. "ISIL's latest targeting of a religious minority is only further testament to its brutal and inhumane treatment of all those who disagree with its divisive goals and toxic beliefs," US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, using another acronym for Islamic State.

World response to armed groups like IS 'shameful': Amnesty

World response to armed groups like IS 'shameful': Amnesty | Archaeology, Culture, Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
World leaders have proved "shameful and ineffective" in failing to protect civilians from groups like Islamic State (IS), Amnesty International said Wednesday, calling 2014 a "catastrophic" year. It said millions of civilians had been killed from Syria to Ukraine, Gaza to Nigeria, while the number of displaced people around the world exceeded 50 million last year for the first time since the end of World War II. "2014 was a catastrophic year for millions caught up in violence," said Amnesty's secretary general, Shalil Shetty. Amnesty singled out the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for criticism, with Shetty saying it had "miserably failed" to protect civilians.

Why did conservative Alaska legalize marijuana? Who's next? | Archaeology, Culture, Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
On Tuesday, Alaska became the first red state to legalize the smoking, growing, and owning of small amounts of marijuana, bringing the decriminalization movement to a conservative stronghold. The frontier state narrowly approved the measure last fall, by 53 percent, joining Colorado and Washington states in legalizing recreational use. Alaska is the third state to legalize recreational marijuana after Colorado and Washington. Why did a conservative state take a decidedly liberal position on marijuana?
