UW-Madison archaeologists to mount new expedition to Troy | Archaeology and the Bronze Age | Scoop.it
Walls of Troy : Wiki Commons
The ruins of ancient Troy will be examined by a cross-disciplinary team of scientists in an expedition led by UW-Madison classics professor William Aylward.

Troy, the palatial city of prehistory, sacked by the Greeks through trickery and a fabled wooden horse, will be excavated anew beginning in 2013 by a cross-disciplinary team of archaeologists and other scientists, it was announced today (Monday, Oct. 15).

The new expedition will be led by University of Wisconsin-Madison classics Professor William Aylward, an archaeologist with long experience digging in the ruins of classical antiquity, including Troy itself. The new international project at Troy, to be conducted under the auspices of and in cooperation with Turkey’s Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, will begin a series of summer-time expeditions beginning in 2013.

EVER WONDER WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE BEFORE COFFEE?

When we talk about the lives of Trojans in the Bronze Age, we may wonder how on earth they survived without some of the delicacies we have today, such as tacos and pizza. One thing is for certain, coffee was not an option. (How ever did they survive?) I guess, when you don’t know what you’re missing, you appreciate what you do have.

So, what did they eat and drink, you ask? There is plenty of evidence...

Amarissa Amber Cale's insight:

Ancient civilisations that once flourished in this region have long been vanquished, either by earthquake or war. All the ancient settlements have one thing in common; all were abandoned at one point or another.

For the better part of eight years now, I have researched one of these ‘archaic nations’… ancient Troy. I have learned much about these ancient peoples and wish to share what I have learned.

Through researching the Trojan people, I have come to understand...

Amarissa Amber Cale's insight:

I panicked as we neared the trench. The trench was now deeper and wider since the last failed attempt we made. I leaned close to my sweet Arabian’s ear and coaxed her on,

“Blaze, you have never failed me. Please, this is the only way out of the City without the guards to stop us from reaching Hektôr. Come on girl, you can do it! I know you can!”

I squeezed my eyes shut, praying to the Gods of Mount Olympus we would land safely on the opposite side. I clenched my thighs tight to Blaze’s flanks, my fists clutched wildly into her snowy mane. I felt my graceful mare lunge with the exhilarating ease of an eagle, just as I heard the screams from my brothers-in-law to stop. We had barely hurdled the trench and Blaze tore into a wild gallop. We were boundless!

“We did it! Blaze, I love you!”

I was forever in her debt.

“Now quickly Blaze, to the Harbour!”
