Why the Comcast-Time Warner Deal Is Far More Dangerous Than You Think | Wired Business | Wired.com | INTRODUCTION TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES DIGITAL TEXTBOOK(PSYCHOLOGY-ECONOMICS-SOCIOLOGY):MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it

The merger would go beyond the cable TV, commercial broadband, and telephone industries to impact satellite TV, television programmers like ESPN and Fox, online video providers like NetFlix and YouTube, and the massive networks at the very heart of the internet.

By Cade Metz, the editor of Wired Enterprise

The Comcast-Time Warner Cable deal is bigger than you think.

In agreeing to pay $45 billion for Time Warner Cable, Comcast hopes to create not only an enormous cable TV provider, but the largest broadband internet provider in the United States and a company that controls about half of all “triple play” services, which bundle cable TV and broadband alongside internet-based telephone connections.

And that only begins to describe the magnitude of the deal.

How Content Curation helps reach Millennials

How Content Curation helps reach Millennials | INTRODUCTION TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES DIGITAL TEXTBOOK(PSYCHOLOGY-ECONOMICS-SOCIOLOGY):MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it

We recently spoke with Thomas Listerman, director of e-communications at University of San Francisco, about the private university’s #USFCA – a user-generated project to reach Millennials.

Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, February 10, 7:18 PM

"In nine months, we have been able to generate 130,000 views and garner over 960 unique contributors" which - Listerman adds - is not bad considering that the University of San Francisco has about 10,000 students.

A great example of building a community by leveraging existing engagement on social networks and content curation: by curating the best content shared from its community, a brand can gain a lot of credibility, brand awareness and message consistency.

Guillaume Decugis's curator insight, February 10, 7:43 PM

According to a lot of studies and opinions, Millenials are hard to reach: they're supposed to have short attention spans, be constantly multi-tasking and have low tolerance for messages that don't relate to them.

Whether or less these are clichés, what the University of San Francisco did is remarkable for several reasons:

1. They're doing with limited resources what some major brands have failed to achieve.

2. They're building on existing behaviors of their community instead of trying to impose new ones.

3. They measure their success by looking both at overall impact (views, people reached) and contributions - showing clearly that the amplification role of their community is key in their communication strategy.

Impressive use case of content curation for brand development through a community.

Good stories, then, not only help us relate to the hero’s journey, as Joseph Campbell pointed out, but the act of reading them actually can reconfigure brain networks. This means that not only are we able to escape from our problems while reading, it also increases compassion to another’s suffering — as well as perhaps to one’s own — which can be a major aid to self-growth and healing, as well as helping to decrease anxiety and depression.

We Are Just Not Here Anymore

We Are Just Not Here Anymore | INTRODUCTION TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES DIGITAL TEXTBOOK(PSYCHOLOGY-ECONOMICS-SOCIOLOGY):MIKE BUSARELLO | Scoop.it
Can we learn to reconnect without using our digital devices?

At weddings, guests tweet real-time of the festivities to friends far away. At sporting events, fans follow scores of games in other cities. In classrooms, students text with friends in other classes and parents out in the world. At funerals, mourners to pals in other places.

Everyone, it seems, is interacting more with people who are elsewhere — and less with the people around them. As technology seeps through society, dampening every dry aspect of our lives, something is happening to: the idea of being present; the desire to be in the moment; the notion of living right here and right now.
