Create Longest Transect

Create Longest Transect | ArcGIS-Brasil | Scoop.it

Creates a transect that crosses through the centroid of each feature.

Tool operates by creating internally a series of lines that transect the feature, but only the longest one is returned. By default 180 lines are used to identify the longest transect. Fewer lines will generate results faster, but will generate less useful results. Greater number of lines will increase certainty, but will take longer.

Expanding Access to LiDAR Through Compression - Feature Articles - Point of Beginning

Expanding Access to LiDAR Through Compression - Feature Articles - Point of Beginning | ArcGIS-Brasil | Scoop.it

What happens when a computer scientist with an uncanny knack for geometry compression takes an interest in LiDAR data? In the case of Martin Isenburg, a self-described “massive data processor and common sense extractor” based in Germany, the result is an award-winning open-source software solution that is making it easier for government agencies and organizations to store and transmit increasingly larger LiDAR data sets by compressing data from the ASPRS LAS format into much smaller LAZ files.

Developer of the LAStools software for processing LiDAR data, Isenburg worked extensively on compressing the connectivity and geometry of polygonal meshes--first as a student at UNC Chapel Hill, then as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley, and finally on his own as a consultant. When he introduced LASzip as part of LAStools in July 2007, it was mostly an experiment in his free time; he had no idea how the compression tool would be received in the commercial sector.

As word began to spread about LASzip, a number of government agencies and private organizations became interested in testing this technology. A sponsor soon stepped forward to fund improvements in the code and ensure that the tool would be released open source under an LGPL license. From there, “it sort of took off,” Isenburg said.

The LASzip compression is lossless, meaning that the LiDAR data is retained exactly: point coordinates, intensities, classification--even the order. The amount of compression that can be achieved on a single dataset therefore varies depending on the order of the points in the file--points in random order achieve much less compression than points that are still in the order in which they were acquired, which is typically the case. Files can often be compressed to as little as 7 to 25 percent of their original size. For LiDAR power users such as NOAA, the USGS, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and a number of private organizations, such a high level of compression saves on storage bandwidth. More importantly, the compression makes it easier to share datasets both internally and externally.

In April 2012, LAStools received a Technology Innovation Award at the Geospatial World Forum in Amsterdam for the LASzip compression tool. Popular commercial software packages such as Certainty 3D’s TopoDOT, Safe Software’s FME and Blue Marble Geographics’ Global Mapper already have native LAZ support. Isenburg said that QT Modeler and Fugroviewer are expected to follow in their next release, and that RIEGL, a major manufacturer of scanner hardware, plans to have RiProcess output directly to LAZ files.......

Create a Dynamic Table in your Map Layout | ArcGIS Resource Center

Create a Dynamic Table in your Map Layout | ArcGIS Resource Center | ArcGIS-Brasil | Scoop.it

Have you ever wanted a dynamic table in your map layout that updated attribute information as you panned and zoomed or as you navigated through a map book? Based upon numerous requests posted on the ArcGIS Ideas site for this specific capability, I’m guessing the answer is YES!

For those not aware, Esri Production Mapping’s graphic table element allows you to create dynamic, data-driven tables in your map layout. The use of dynamic tables is not limited to map documents enabled with data driven pages, they’re useful in any map document that requires table content be updated with changes in the visible extent of the data frame. Below, I’ll highlight steps for adding a simple dynamic table to a state map book that will list the state capitals visible on each page.....

Field mapping and Python scripting | ArcGIS Resource Center

Field mapping and Python scripting | ArcGIS Resource Center | ArcGIS-Brasil | Scoop.it

A number of geoprocessing tools including Spatial Join (Analysis), Append (Management), Merge (Management), Feature Class To Feature Class (Conversion), and Table To Table (Conversion), have a parameter for controlling how fields from the input dataset(s) are processed and written, or mapped, to the output dataset – the Field Map parameter. In addition to the simple moving of attributes from input to output, field mapping can also be useful for some common tasks such as field concatenation and calculating statistics like mean, sum, and standard deviation.

If you haven’t used the Field Map before, you should! Understanding and using field mapping will often reduce the number of processing steps in a workflow, and ensure that, in any scenario, attributes are handled in an appropriate way. Yes, the Field Map parameter is a complicated one, but it is well worth the time it takes to figure it out.

Because the Field Map is a complicated parameter, working with it in Python can also be complicated. The best way to interact with field mapping in Python scripting is with the FieldMappings object. In Python, most geoprocessing tool parameter types are seen as simple numbers or strings (specifying a feature class input is as easy as providing the feature class’ path). But several of the more complex parameters have objects that exist to help you effectively work with the parameter. The Field Map parameter can accept a long structured string indicating the field map settings (you may have seen this long string equivalent in geoprocessing messages), however, working with the field mapping string is inefficient and error-prone, so use the FieldMappings object for the best experience.

Problem

I was recently presented with a data migration problem where field mappings and Python scripting literally saved me weeks of work. The goal was to convert a collection of hundreds of VPF (Vector Product Format) databases containing many feature classes to a handful of geodatabases, and because of the large scale of the migration it had to be accomplished in an automated fashion (this is where the many weeks of work would be saved). The schema of the geodatabases was already set up with a number of feature datasets and empty feature classes into which the VPF feature class data would be imported using the Append (management) tool.

The iteration through the collection of VPF databases was solved with some simple looping techniques involving the arcpy.ListDatasets() and arcpy.ListFeatureClasses() functions. However, there was a fundamental problem that nearly derailed the automation of this process: VPF feature classes can have spaces in their field names, while geodatabase datasets cannot. When the empty geodatabase feature classes were created from the schema of the VPF feature classes, the spaces in the field names were automatically changed to underscores ( _ ) in the geodatabase feature classes. This very subtle difference caused huge ripples in the automated process, since the Append (Management) tool can not automatically match fields like ‘mcc description’ to ‘mcc_description’; in the output geodatabase feature class, all the values in the ‘mcc_description’ field are NULL because the fields were not matched.

What’s New in 10.1 – The big, easy button for importing your custom datasets | ArcGIS Resource Center

What’s New in 10.1 – The big, easy button for importing your custom datasets | ArcGIS Resource Center | ArcGIS-Brasil | Scoop.it

This is the third in a series of blogs about what’s new in Business Analyst 10.1.

New in Business Analyst 10.1 are some improvements to the process by which you import your custom datasets. The key to these improvements centers around “metadata” or “data about your data”. Now this isn’t data about data structure. It’s data about data content.

Wikipedia has a great entry on this subject.

For example, here’s some metadata for the data variable ‘2011 Total Population’ in the standard US dataset for Business Analyst.

<Summarization name=”TOTPOP_CY” FieldName=”TOTPOP_CY” dataset=”2011 Updated Demographics (Esri)” aliasname=”2011 Total Population” basetype=”POPWGT10″ SummaryType=”SUM” WeightField=”" category=”2011 Population (Esri)” previewvalue=”37461001″ longdescription=”2011 Total Population (Esri)” groupings=”2011/2016 Demographics (Esri)” varYear=”2011″> <Defaults decimals=”0″ percentage=”" valueType=”COUNT” indexable=”False” /> </Summarization>

This information tells Business Analyst how to display this value (both format and in which category), how to describe it (long description), and how to summarize it (for custom trade areas). In Business Analyst, information about all data content appears in BDS (Business Analyst Datasource) files.

In Business Analyst 10.0 when you import your custom data, you can access some of these metadata properties by changing to Advanced Mode in the Custom Data Setup. But, it requires filling these properties in manually… which can be laborious for datasets with lots of variables.
