Puerto Rico - Revving up the farming economy with aquaponics

Puerto Rico - Revving up the farming economy with aquaponics | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
Agriculture on the Caribbean island is reviving as Puerto Ricans go back to the land to grow food for local consumption and help tackle a $73bn debt crisis
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
We don't hear much about aquaponics in places like Puerto Rico, and so it is great to see a story like this.  Modern farming that uses sustainable practices has to be a positive step forward, especially in a country like Puerto Rico where they already have such a great track record in sustainably produced energy.

Growing Solutions in Tohoku with Japan Aquaponics

Growing Solutions in Tohoku with Japan Aquaponics | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

As Aragon St. Charles watched footage of the tsunami triggered by the March 11th earthquake in Japan sweeping across the landscape from his still shaking Tokyo home, he could hardly believe his eyes. This land, some of Japan’s richest and most productive, stood soaked with the tsunami’s salty toxic cocktail mixed as it rushed over agricultural, urban, and industrial areas alike or covered with a fine layer of radioactive fallout. Such soil then, was rendered unsuitable for growing. In a country with a food self-sufficiency rate of less than 40-percent, this was bad news indeed.

“Straightaway it came to me that this (Aquaponics) was something that could be used in Japan,” said St. Charles. As he draws diagram after diagram of fish tanks, alternative energy sources, of grow beds and their crop arrangements throughout our conversation, it’s easy to see that just under the tidy chinos and button-down shirt of the legal recruiter he is by day rests a farmer just waiting for his moment.

UK - WWII Bomb Shelter Becomes Hi-Tech Salad Farm Deep Under London | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
These tunnels once offered beds for Londoners during the war. In peacetime, they now house salad beds capable of delivering fresh produce from farm to fork in four hours.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
This is brilliant - it epitomises what we should be doing to bring farms closer to the consumers.  Growing in disused tunnels is clever in many different way - not only is it a highly efficient use of otherwise unused space, but tunnels also generally maintain a comfortable temperature all year round, thus negating some of the costs of maintaining a temperature controlled environment.

Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse

Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

Aquaponics does not need to be a stand-alone system, and so it is great to see it integrated with many other types of systems and technologies.  Aquaponics needs a constant source of power, and so pairing it with solar, wind, or any other sustainable energy source is a great idea.  This project, a huge Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse for Vermont could be very interesting indeed.
