Fantastic, absolutely brilliant when we see the younger generation getting involved with innovations like aquaponics and taking issues of food security seriously.

"In this week’s episode of Food Makers on Nov. 28 at 2pm PST/ 5pm EST, I’ll be talking to Pierre Beauchamp, a young entrepreneur who is making a name for himself in aquaponics. Watch the episode here on Google+."

Manhattan Restaurant’s Rooftop Farm Provides all the Fresh Ingredients it Needs | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

This is not actually aquaponics but I thought it was very interesting and shows a great example of the direction that we need to go in.  Micro-Farm production in any and all available spaces in order to localise food production and to better ensure food security for all of us.

Below New York City’s skyscrapers, 8-foot tall okra plants tower over an impressive array of vegetables, herbs and flowers growing on a rooftop farm situated just 100-feet from the kitchen of Riverpark Restaurant.

DIY Vertical Aquaponics on the patio.... but is it aquaponics?

DIY Vertical Aquaponics on the patio.... but is it aquaponics? | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

This is a very nice looking system that has been installed somewhere in Australia - but it does beg the question... "Is it Aquaponics?"  This system circulates the fish water through soil.... so the "ponics" part of aquaponics is... well... totally missing!  It is still a fantastic idea, but what do you think?  Is it aquaponics?

After a lot of reading, field trips to a few impressive facilities, and a trip to Africa, where we secured a partnership with a local institution, we wisely decided to build a system locally first."

Aquaponics in Tohoku with the ANZCCJ

Aquaponics in Tohoku with the ANZCCJ | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

Japan Aquaponics has recently been collaborating with the Australia & New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan to design, deliver and install a custom-built indoor aquaponics system into a community learning centre in Minamisanriku.

With financial contributions from Japan Aquaponics, the ANZCCJ, Sodatec, An anonymous donor in the US, as well as a number of smaller donations received from all over the world - we were finally able to make this project happen.

Thanks also go to OGA for AID, an excellent charity that is supporting the locals in this and other areas, and who hosted us for this project and is now looking after the aquaponics system at their learning centre.

Growing Solutions in Tohoku with Japan Aquaponics

Growing Solutions in Tohoku with Japan Aquaponics | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

As Aragon St. Charles watched footage of the tsunami triggered by the March 11th earthquake in Japan sweeping across the landscape from his still shaking Tokyo home, he could hardly believe his eyes. This land, some of Japan’s richest and most productive, stood soaked with the tsunami’s salty toxic cocktail mixed as it rushed over agricultural, urban, and industrial areas alike or covered with a fine layer of radioactive fallout. Such soil then, was rendered unsuitable for growing. In a country with a food self-sufficiency rate of less than 40-percent, this was bad news indeed.

“Straightaway it came to me that this (Aquaponics) was something that could be used in Japan,” said St. Charles. As he draws diagram after diagram of fish tanks, alternative energy sources, of grow beds and their crop arrangements throughout our conversation, it’s easy to see that just under the tidy chinos and button-down shirt of the legal recruiter he is by day rests a farmer just waiting for his moment.

Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse

Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

Aquaponics does not need to be a stand-alone system, and so it is great to see it integrated with many other types of systems and technologies.  Aquaponics needs a constant source of power, and so pairing it with solar, wind, or any other sustainable energy source is a great idea.  This project, a huge Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse for Vermont could be very interesting indeed.
