Research finds salt tolerance gene in soybean

A collaborative research project between Australian and Chinese scientists has shown how soybean can be bred to better tolerate soil salinity.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

This is very interesting - with significant areas of land being lost to increased salinity every single day, the ability to potentially breed crops with higher tolerances to salinity could be extremely important.  In aquaponics, this could mean the ability to use new types of fish if we can run systems with higher salinity levels and still have crops remain viable.

This week the United Way of Greater Duluth Volunteer Center and the Duluth News Tribune recognize Lisa Plachta’s contributions to Junior League of Duluth.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

It always amazes me to see how often aquaponics is used in education, volunteering and community projects around the globe.  Almost every other project seems to be dedicated to a cause to provide something positive to others.  This is why we love aquaponics!

Testing the waters for gardening - Aquaponics in India

Testing the waters for gardening - Aquaponics in India | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
Vijayakumar Narayanan says ‘aquaponics’, a system of cultivation, is the future of agriculture
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

Japan Aquaponics has consulted on several projects in India and we strongly believe that if certain issues can be overcome, then aquaponics holds great promise for countries like this.  Most water in certain parts of India comes from great underground aquifers which are very very quickly becoming depleted.  Millions of wells dug over the past decade have severely affected these aquifers and they are simply not being replenished anywhere near as quickly as they are being depleted.  Water efficiency in agriculture will soon become an absolute imperative in India... and most parts of the world in reality.

Miniponics - DIY Aquaponics

How to make your own Aquaponis herb kitchen garden for just under 10$
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

We LOVE DIY designs at Japan Aquaponics, and this is a really nice, simple little system that could be made from an old water cooler bottle.  This would really need only a few very small fish, so not goldfish... perhaps beta fish or something similar.

These water bottles can also be used to make DIY swirl filters as well!

The 25-year-old Louisiana State University grads can be found here on weekdays tending to the rows of all natural lettuces, herbs and fruit-bearing plants that fill the space they built with their own hands. Both had other jobs waiting for them upon graduation; Alvis had a shot in the real-estate business, and Braud was going to work as an investment banker. Several models later, they are fully functional in their Hockley greenhouse and sell fresh produce to 15 Houston restaurants

You Can Farm is probably the Joel Salatin book that kicked off more future farmers than any other, and I have to include us in that count.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

This is not about aquaponics, but is nevertheless a great book for farming and agriculture in general.  Joel Salatin is an extremely engaging individual who has written numerous books encouraging permaculture-style sustainable farming on both small and larger scales.  We would genuinely recommend looking at any of Joel's works and there are some great video to see as well.  Google him today!

Hope Center to build aquaponics farm to grow produce, raise fish to feed hungry. | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
A food pantry in Macomb County plans to build a commercial-scale aquaponics farm to help feed the hungry.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

This looks great, although we do wonder why they have only three layers in such a tall space?.... commercial hydroponics would fit at least double that, and so if we want aquaponics to be competitive then we need to increase all aspects of planting density.
