Puerto Rico - Revving up the farming economy with aquaponics

Puerto Rico - Revving up the farming economy with aquaponics | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
Agriculture on the Caribbean island is reviving as Puerto Ricans go back to the land to grow food for local consumption and help tackle a $73bn debt crisis
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
We don't hear much about aquaponics in places like Puerto Rico, and so it is great to see a story like this.  Modern farming that uses sustainable practices has to be a positive step forward, especially in a country like Puerto Rico where they already have such a great track record in sustainably produced energy.

UK - WWII Bomb Shelter Becomes Hi-Tech Salad Farm Deep Under London

UK - WWII Bomb Shelter Becomes Hi-Tech Salad Farm Deep Under London | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
These tunnels once offered beds for Londoners during the war. In peacetime, they now house salad beds capable of delivering fresh produce from farm to fork in four hours.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
This is brilliant - it epitomises what we should be doing to bring farms closer to the consumers.  Growing in disused tunnels is clever in many different way - not only is it a highly efficient use of otherwise unused space, but tunnels also generally maintain a comfortable temperature all year round, thus negating some of the costs of maintaining a temperature controlled environment.

EUROPE: Greenhouse in the sky: inside Europe's biggest urban farm | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
A disused office in The Hague has been revamped as a sprawling rooftop greenhouse, with a fish farm operating on the floor below. Are we entering a new age of urban agriculture?
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
We think that every roof should be designed this way!  Such a waste of (generally) disused space.  Green roofs also help with water retention and can mitigate flood issues stemming from the way cities divert rainwater.

Fish Species for Commercial Production in Aquaponics

Fish Species for Commercial Production in Aquaponics | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

An interesting chart outlining some of the benefits and negatives of particular fish species for commercial aquaponics.  Sturgeon seems to be the winner by all accounts!   Interestingly Japan Aquaponics was approached by a company who raised sturgeon, but unfortunately we could not work with them as they were also commercial providers of sharks fins - a practice that we could not reconcile with our beliefs in sustainability and no unnecessary cruelty to animals.

Build an Aquaponic Garden with Arduino

Build an Aquaponic Garden with Arduino | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
This aquaponic garden will bring your veggies and your fish tank into perfectly sustainable harmony. Use Arduino to take this set-up to the next level.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
Here is another self-build system (we love DIY systems!) that uses Arduino electronics to monitor and help control the growing environment.  Building your own aquaponics systems teaches you so much more than simply buying one off the shelf, and if you are interested in electronics, then a project like this gets to combine electronics and agriculture... a very useful skill for the future we think.

Permaculture - Year Round Growing in Underground Greenhouses

Permaculture - Year Round Growing in Underground Greenhouses | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
Setting up an underground greenhouse means vegetables can be grown all year round, whatever the weather, creating resilience and a more constant income stream for market gardeners.
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
This is not directly aquaponics, but integrating aquaponics with these underground greenhouses (Walipini) would be a great idea for a more sustainable greenhouse.  Heating costs are one of the biggest costs for growers, so this helps mitigate that.

Sterling National Bank continues to nurture nearly 60,000 tilapia left behind when the Continental Organics aquaponic fish and greens farm went belly up in October.

Japan Aquaponics's insight:

Sometimes we need to see these articles to remind everyone that aquaponics is no different to any other business - it can go bankrupt if you have not done your due diligence and market research, and actually planned the business properly.  This one went belly-up owing almost $10,000,000 U.S.  So when people blindly talk about setting up an aquaponics business we always advise caution.... this is why!
