EUROPE: Greenhouse in the sky: inside Europe's biggest urban farm

EUROPE: Greenhouse in the sky: inside Europe's biggest urban farm | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
A disused office in The Hague has been revamped as a sprawling rooftop greenhouse, with a fish farm operating on the floor below. Are we entering a new age of urban agriculture?
Japan Aquaponics's insight:
We think that every roof should be designed this way!  Such a waste of (generally) disused space.  Green roofs also help with water retention and can mitigate flood issues stemming from the way cities divert rainwater.

Fish Species for Commercial Production in Aquaponics

Fish Species for Commercial Production in Aquaponics | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it
Japan Aquaponics's insight:

An interesting chart outlining some of the benefits and negatives of particular fish species for commercial aquaponics.  Sturgeon seems to be the winner by all accounts!   Interestingly Japan Aquaponics was approached by a company who raised sturgeon, but unfortunately we could not work with them as they were also commercial providers of sharks fins - a practice that we could not reconcile with our beliefs in sustainability and no unnecessary cruelty to animals.

USA - Bank still feeding sixty thousand fish at bankrupt New Windsor aquaponic company | Aquaponics in Action | Scoop.it

Sterling National Bank continues to nurture nearly 60,000 tilapia left behind when the Continental Organics aquaponic fish and greens farm went belly up in October.

Japan Aquaponics's insight:

Sometimes we need to see these articles to remind everyone that aquaponics is no different to any other business - it can go bankrupt if you have not done your due diligence and market research, and actually planned the business properly.  This one went belly-up owing almost $10,000,000 U.S.  So when people blindly talk about setting up an aquaponics business we always advise caution.... this is why!

The chef in the article discusses a common issue in aquaponics, but also in farming in general, the need for diversification for small farms and the need to 'upsell' produce into higher quality produce.  This is a common theme in agriculture and should be addressed more fully by aquaponics practicioners as well we believe.
