Larry Ellison plans to grow food on Lanai through aquaponics, hydroponics - Pacific Business News

Larry Ellison plans to grow food on Lanai through aquaponics, hydroponics - Pacific Business News | Aquaponics World View | Scoop.it
The first phase of the project would be located in Palawai Basin at the former piggery site and include four greenhouses as well as about a half-acre of bio-beds to grow enough produce to supply residents and the hotels. It is scheduled to get going this summer, according to Pulama Lanai, the operational entity owned by the billionaire tech titan.
Jim Hall's insight:
Spoke to people on Lanai about aquaponics and a co-worker was even doing some, before Ellison bought the island. I figured it was a matter of time and I'm glad to see he's moving ahead with it. I still would like to see it being done on a backyard scale as I did it on Maui. Great for the water situation on Lanai.

Really need to define what "every Vegetable needed year round for a family of 4 means." Are we really talking every bit of vegetable product a family of 4 eats in a year, if that is what you think then think again (No way this system can possibly provide 100% of plant derived calories for even one person let alone a family of 4, you would need acres to provide enough grain, beans and root crops to provide a family of 4 100% of their diet.) This might provide year round fresh veggies and salad for a family of 4 if they eat a rather average diet and live in a region or provide an environment where they can really grow those crops all year round.

Looking forward to seeing what the contest entrants come up with!"

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Aquaponics » Balloon Juice

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Aquaponics » Balloon Juice | Aquaponics World View | Scoop.it
First a thumbnail sketch of aquaponics (AQ) in general and as practiced in the above pictured greenhouse. AQ is the process of growing plants in water like hydroponics but the fertilizer is (mostly) provided by fish who live in the water used to flood the plants. It is, at it’s heart, a symbiotic relationship wherein the plants feed from the fishes’ effluent which cleans the water that is returned to the fish who then, frankly, shit in it again. Fish gotta do what fish gotta do. The good news is that fish poo is just about the best poo you can use for plant food.

New Boston man to share his aquaponics expertise By BARBARA TAORMINA Union Leader Correspondent Published Sep 17, 2013 at 3:00 am (Updated Sep 16, 2013) | Aquaponics World View | Scoop.it
Boston resident Mike Griffin decided a few years ago to try to use a small goldfish pond in his yard to grow some vegetables. Griffin, who had decades of experience in the construction industry, built a greenhouse with gravity pipes that carried nutrient-rich water from the pond. Plants were placed in holes on top of the pipes with their roots stretching down into the water where they were able to feed on the continual stream of fish waste. The piping system then carried clean water back to the pond.
