We use the Most Sustainable form of Agriculture on the Planet - Join us in Growing Organic Foods with Fewer Resources.
Jim Hall's insight:
My friends at The Farming Fish are almost to their goal. As the 2nd Organic Aquaponics farm in the U.S.A. It would not take much to hit their goal with a few more donations. Their close the $40,000 and need $42,000 to actually get the project money. Personally I spent time there and believe it is a worthwhile investment, if for no other reason than to see how alternative farming in extreme weather is possible and can help feed out planet. They are donating produce throughout the winter to foodbanks based on donations. So your money works two ways!

What We Do Ho‘oulu Pacific believes that an affordable, reliable supply of nutritious food is the foundation for a healthy community. We address high rates of obesity, diabetes, and emigration found throughout the Pacific Islands by providing agriculture services and technology.
Our Work Our team has piloted over 80 systems in American Samoa and Hawaii that now produce more than 40 different types of vegetables and fruit, and fish.
When Kreg Boudro wants to feed his spinach, he throws a cup of pellets into a tank full of tilapia. Hundreds of fish churn to the surface, pale sides flashing in the dim light of the shed. “They’re always moving,” says Kreg. “The constant motion makes sure their waste stays suspended.” He and wife Angie own Rock Field Farms, the first aquaponic farm in Jackson County. As in hydroponic farming, plants grow without soil; instead, roots feed directly into nutrient-rich water. What distinguishes aquaponics is the symbiotic relationship between fish and plants.
A College Student Has Figured Out How To Grow Food Using Your Old Fish Tank What started out as a mishmosh of Tupperware containers, cardboard, and Duct tape is now a functioning system of pipes, drains, and plastic that turns a standard fish tank...
Jim Hall's insight:
From my experience, like many others, these systems are esthetic, but don't produce much in the way of plants, the idea of fish being an alternate source of protein is substituted for ornamental fish and the structure require timers and electric pumps to operate, as opposed to the use of air pumps to move water at a lower cost, which is less likely to plug up and burn out and produce a realistic amount of food as a backyard system that uses food fish, more grow area and cost efficient air pump for aeration and water movement.
First a thumbnail sketch of aquaponics (AQ) in general and as practiced in the above pictured greenhouse. AQ is the process of growing plants in water like hydroponics but the fertilizer is (mostly) provided by fish who live in the water used to flood the plants. It is, at it’s heart, a symbiotic relationship wherein the plants feed from the fishes’ effluent which cleans the water that is returned to the fish who then, frankly, shit in it again. Fish gotta do what fish gotta do. The good news is that fish poo is just about the best poo you can use for plant food.
Nelson and Pade offers aquaponic systems, aquaponic courses, aquaponic training, aquaponic systems design and aquaponic greenhouse tours. Nelson and Pade, Inc. is the leader of the global aquaponics industry.
The first phase of the project would be located in Palawai Basin at the former piggery site and include four greenhouses as well as about a half-acre of bio-beds to grow enough produce to supply residents and the hotels. It is scheduled to get going this summer, according to Pulama Lanai, the operational entity owned by the billionaire tech titan.
Jim Hall's insight:
Spoke to people on Lanai about aquaponics and a co-worker was even doing some, before Ellison bought the island. I figured it was a matter of time and I'm glad to see he's moving ahead with it. I still would like to see it being done on a backyard scale as I did it on Maui. Great for the water situation on Lanai.
NEW! Introduction to Aquaponics and Aquaculture Learn the basics of aquaponics, water quality, system components, types of systems, fish species choices, plant selection, and system construction. Participants will learn how to construct and manage a small aquaponics production system and produce food for home or small-scale commercial use.
