Food That Magically Regrows Itself from Kitchen Scraps

Food That Magically Regrows Itself from Kitchen Scraps | Aquaponics for Aquarists | Scoop.it
Save money and eat organically by planting food that magically regrows itself from kitchen scraps.
Stephen Pond's insight:

While not the main way that organic vegetables are usually grown, there are a lot of things that can be said for using kitchen scraps to start a flourishng organic garden of the foods that you generally eat - otherwise they wouldn't be your kitchen in the first place.  Using these scraps and an aquaponic garden to grow them makes it one of the best ways to get organic food that is tailored to your eating habits.  Not all may work for you, but the possibilities are endless.  As mentioned in the article - start with organic foods and the cycle will be as pure as it can be.

Stephen Pond's insight:

Wondering what fish you can use in a home aquaponics system that will yield fish you can eat, and are recommended for use.  Normally these  species of fish will outgrow an aquarists indoor tank, but if you have the right size tanks set up, that should make little difference.  Tilapia are of course mentioned, as are goldfish for those who don't necessarily want to eat fish that have been personally grown and become pets, but look inside to see the rest....

Phil's Gardening Tips And Tricks Aquaponics First try And Proof Of Concept - YouTube

Stephen Pond's insight:

How tough can building an aquaponics system be?  Not so tough even if you are just getting started in the technology.  Phil's Gardening Tips and Tricks shows how a very simple outdoor system can be constructed.. The system is large enough where a number of plants can be fed and grown.  Not a home aquarists system, but good to grow goldfish in for a first try.  He references J.T. Bear, who's video offers a different way to start off as well.  That is a blueprint for a small one plant system integrated into the fish reservoir.

Both of these videos are recommended.

Note the problems with drilling that are found.  Phil's configuration is a proof of concept, not a finished project.  There are comments that can be implemented in your own version and design.  The piping can be modified and an elbow put in at top to drop the water spray down to substrate level (or below) to prevent to spash-over that happens with first power.

This Aquaponic Farm Holds 20,000 Lbs Of Fish And Grows 70,000 Vegetables In A 1/4 Acre Area | Aquaponics for Aquarists | Scoop.it
Aquaponics is a symbiotic farming model that combines two different techniques to provide water and nutrients to plants in a unique way.
Stephen Pond's insight:

Can you imagine a 100' x 100' area providing enough lettuce for 400 side salads a day, with tweaking it can go even higher.  Portable Farms Aquaponics Systems is in the business of makling small growing areas for everywhere.  What is most interesting to me is that the original ideas were pioneered in 1972 where he had to clean fishtanks in a university.  I see this as an instance where the home (or in this case the university) aquarist has developed a system that keeps the fish clean and the plants organic and growing fast.  This business is focussed on making growing simple and very low maintenance or work involved.

A Brief Introduction to Microbes in Aquaponics Systems

A Brief Introduction to Microbes in Aquaponics Systems | Aquaponics for Aquarists | Scoop.it
Without microbes in aquaponics, your system will not survive. In this post, the experts at Bright Agrotech discuss the basics of microbes in AP. Read more.
Stephen Pond's insight:

It is not complete and it is brief, but it is a good starting place to get an understanding of the role of various microbes in the lives of tropical fish and the gardening of plants.  Without them, there would be no way to sustain the higher forms of life like tropical fish and the organic vegetables they fertilize.

A good understanding of the Nitrogen cycle and the way that toxic wastes created by lifeforms are eliminated from the habitat is important when dealing with closed systems such as an aquaponic home garden, just as it is in a commercial endeavour.  I certainly hope that additional parts will be published.  The host, BrightAgrotech is a strong guiding light for success, and their information is well worth reviewing.  Too bad I can't get the link for the podcast to go to anything other than a blank page.

Tebesite – Aquaponics In Home - Find Your Lifestyle Here

Tebesite – Aquaponics In Home - Find Your Lifestyle Here | Aquaponics for Aquarists | Scoop.it
In the planet of natural plant lifestyle aquaponics in your own home is really a fairly new craze. It's a method which creates Eco-systems exactly in which fish assistance the actual lifestyle an growth of plants and vice-versa.
Stephen Pond's insight:

I like to see the various types of fish tank systems for the indoor aquarist that use the technology of aquaponics for filtering the water. Aquaponics can be a low-tech way of making it safe for the fish while providing some organic vegetables or herbs in the process.  This article shows the way some others have designed their tanks to adapt to growing both fish and orgainc plants in a more decorative way than most of the (utilitarian) aquaponic systems usually displayed.

As a longterm aquarist, I simply like the fish to be prominent.  I figure their needs are foremost, the Aquaponic system is simply a filter and the food grown is a huge plus at any dinner table.  The fish are the living picture element.  They should be on an equal viewing area as the plants.  These pictures show somewhat what I am aiming for.  Just wish the fish were placed more at eye level, that's all.
