Sustainable Urban Farming in NYC

Sustainable Urban Farming in NYC | Aquaponics | Scoop.it
Sustainable urban farming. Grow tilapia, mushrooms, veggies and harvest wild edible plants like garlic mustard
Jack Mosel's insight:

Sent to S.A.V.E NY Farms 6/2/2013

I am very interested in aquaponics. I restore lakes using biology for the past 30 years. I am the senior Lake Restoration Consultant for Lake Savers (see www.lake-savers.com).

My phone number is (914) 260-5678

As of the last three years, I have been researching and deploying the additive of biogenic silica with essential trace micro-nutrients to bloom rapid onset siliceous diatom's in eutrophic lakes. I have been seeking the right compound for just this biological activity in lakes for a long time. I have found the correct chemical composition to achieve this three years ago. The benefit for this is huge. We have been testing this compound in lakes and reservoirs for the past three years. I have U.S. EPA approval for this product and I am deploying this additive to water bodies throughout the country. The microscopy assay's we took in these water bodies' have all shown that the siliceous diatom blooms every time when we add this non-toxic compound to our water bodies, in great abundance.

Why am I telling you this?...

As I am writing this, I have a desire to implement this technology to Aquaponic farming systems. Why?.. Because the benefit for providing siliceous diatoms to the fish tank side of the Aquaponic system has many advantages over feeding fish with pelletized fish food... Which we now know is derived from GMO corn and which also has trace amounts of Arsenic in these feed stock's as well (just as chicken and livestock also have this in them). The fish love eating the Diatom! It's like steak to them! All that is needed is sunlight and the exact blend of biogenic silica with trace micro-nutrients to be present in a water body to instantly bloom abundant siliceous diatoms. These diatoms also super-saturate the water body with dissolved oxygen. Super-saturation means that the thermal gradient of the water bodies' capacity to hold oxygen is surpassed. This is solely due to the fact that the diatom bloom is causing this to occur. This occurs because the diatom is a photosynthetic creature, producing Oxygen from their metabolism processes... The fish are benefitted also from this, as they are thriving in a well oxygenated environment, beyond what an aeration system can provide...

On the vegetative side of the Aquaponic system.. I would suggest the compound of our proprietary biogenic silica Foliar spray. This has been proven to increase vegetation yields by as much as 300 percent in traditional / conventional soil (organic) farming practices. The reason is that the silica with the right form of micro-nutrients, provides the plant cell wall to be fortified with additional Silica. The nutritional value of the food produced is greatly enhanced as well as the micro-nutrients within the compound provide essential mineralization formerly found in humic rich traditional farming soils. As nutritional / essential mineralization is paramount to providing healthy agronomy practices, this is vastly missing from non-soil (Aquaponic) farming. Humics and essential mineralization and vitamin creation through plant biological pharmico-kinetics is a huge missing link here (in my opinion). As we all believe that local and sustainable Eco-friendly, fresh and healthy foods are the top priority in today's rush to solve for "peak food"... I am at your service and wish to become involved in Friendly Farms in a big way.

Please forward this to anyone you deem would get the most use from this information. I want NYS to lead the world in shining the light on Aquaponics and Lake restoration. I am a NYS Certified 5-9 & 7-12 Earth Science, Environmental Science and Biology Teacher. I have public lake restoration projects (of note locally), that include Greenwood Lake, Tarrytown Lakes Reservoirs and Duck Pond in Croton, NY. I live 45 minutes north of NYC.

I look forward to hearing from someone.

Thank you and best regards!

Jack Mosel

Will Allen uses aquaponics as one part of many approaches to growing sustainable food in an urban jungle.  His efforts to bring fresh food to the under-priveledged is remarkable, and inspiring.

Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse

Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse | Aquaponics | Scoop.it

Aquaponics does not need to be a stand-alone system, and so it is great to see it integrated with many other types of systems and technologies.  Aquaponics needs a constant source of power, and so pairing it with solar, wind, or any other sustainable energy source is a great idea.  This project, a huge Wind-Powered Aquaponic Dome Greenhouse for Vermont could be very interesting indeed.
