Hi Rachel,
As I expressed on LinkedIn, no, this post isn’t specifically about you, and I mean no offense to those established folks in the industry who are running successful operations and have their markets figured out.
Charlie Dare's insight:

Here the debate continues in this blogs comments pro Nate with others like rupertofOZ and others being positive about towers.Plenty more expert derision contrary to this view point not here but in a Professional LinkedIn Aquaponics group by expert commercial growers that dont "buy it" or the industry would be using them..This is the attempt to justify them from the seller~

Indoor urban farms called wasteful, 'pie in the sky' | Cornell Chronicle | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
Cornell Chronicle: Daily news from Cornell University
Charlie Dare's insight:

Local food production is not always the most sustainable option, especially when growing crops out of season, Albright added. Even under optimal conditions, lettuce produced in Ithaca greenhouses has a carbon footprint that is barely better than lettuce transported from 3,000 miles away, he said.

“There’s a lot of sentimental attachment to local food production, and the quality is likely to be better, but the phrase ‘food miles’ shouldn’t scare people because the alternative isn’t always better. A system viewpoint is critical,” Albright said.

How can we cope with the global future challenges? The growing world population induces competition for water, land, food, and energy. But resources are limited, and unsustainable agricultural practices and climate change are aggravating these problems. Evolution of Aquaponic Design Continues - Earthan Group

Evolution of Aquaponic Design Continues - Earthan Group | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
The latest in aquaponic designs for the home or commercial aquaponic grower. This article takes your understanding of aquaponics to a new level.
Charlie Dare's insight:

For the brave ones, we can use this “advanced understanding of nature” to our advantage and create or co-create with nature engineered ecosystems that utilize all our inputs to net the most outputs possible.  This is where sustainability starts.  Sustainable is not something we are, it is something we are ever becoming.  Because of technology advancements and fast access to information, we can speed this process of evolution up.

For rich Arabs oil money to grow greens to keep the locals pacified might be OK for them~ I don't think technology is really the problem. I also think there are plenty of "proven" technologies that work. The problem is trying to use said technology and make a profit growing something like lettuce. The margins just aren't there.??

If you are looking for a cheap and effective way to build an indoor system from cheap parts, this may be just the thing.  The blog outlines a very easy way to build a single growbed tier system from some of the cheaper products found at Ikea.

You will also have to visit a hardware store fore for the plumbing, which is also well documented.

Besides telling you exactly what parts you need to buy from Ikea, with links directly to the Ikea catalog for you to see their listings, the rest of the build is carefully pictured and explained.

If you are unwilling to experiment in your first build for a decent sized aquaponics garden, this may just be the post that gets you started on your way to food self-sufficiency.  Cheap and effective, with all parts identified and easily obtainable, a great start.

Stephen Pond's curator insight, March 7, 12:03 PM

Wondering if your grow bed is deep enough for the plants you are planning to grow?  Well this is a short and sweet discussion of grow bed depth for flood and drain systems.  The type of plant determines, to a great extent, the depth of the grow bed you want to opperate.   B uit the article also defines the various zones that occur in deeper bed systems.

If you are using continuous flow, this doesn't make a lot of difference. Those who are operating flood and drain systems, especially with the benefits of worms in the substrate, the depth is a factor to deal with.

So green non toxic solutions are my first option~Of course screens on air inlets and keeping a clean environment and care introducing plants and fish should also be quarantined initially to make sure no disease is present. A salt prophylactic bath can reduce the chance of fungal infections from transport knocks and dings to baby scales..the closer the sourced hatchery the better, equalizing water temp Ph also reduces shock and stress the greatest precipitator of disease and deaths.
