A Guide to Growing Plants with Lights Grow Lights are an amazing addition to indoor growing, in this post we’ll go through research that will initially be controversial to many within industries using them.
Charlie Dare's insight:

It turns out that the best type of light for plant growth is LED. Why and how is this even possible? To answer this question one must learn specifically what plants require to grow. Plants only feed on very few and very specific light spectrums, plants also require heat and special times to produce different nutrients.

Popular Fish, Tilapia, Contains Potentially Dangerous Fatty Acid Combination

Popular Fish, Tilapia, Contains Potentially Dangerous Fatty Acid Combination | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
Farm-raised tilapia, one of the most highly consumed fish in America, has very low levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, according to new research.
Charlie Dare's insight:

Tilapia has higher levels of potentially detrimental long-chain omega-6 fatty acids than 80-percent-lean hamburger, doughnuts and even pork bacon, the article says.

"For individuals who are eating fish as a method to control inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, it is clear from these numbers that tilapia is not a good choice," the article says. "All other nutritional content aside, the inflammatory potential of hamburger and pork bacon is lower than the average serving of farmed tilapia."

Great summary of where we are in New Zealand.

Though There are real benefits are outside of the scope of this study including research into boutique ultra strong fibers, esp extraction  and materials handling, the carbon footprint alone should be driving the economics. Plasticizers and bonding agents like hemp furfural (resin) have other useful applications  replacing carbon intense alternatives. Housing panelling and structural and construction grade laminates are land friendly, employ people and 'trade aid' into marginal land use areas. Why are we so constrained in our outlook. Internalise the economic benefits of hemp back into communities... (we have a responsibility to create wealth where we destroy 'income' across sectors that previously enjoyed protection by prohibition.)

It was a dream, from that man of science, Joseph Banks..... that New Zealand palyed its part in keeping ol'blighty in hemp stream.

How Plant Growth is Affected by Temperature

How Plant Growth is Affected by Temperature | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
Plant growth can be brought to a stop if temperatures are too low or too high. Learn to maximize your yield by providing the ideal temps in your grow room....
Charlie Dare's insight:

If the nutrient solution gets too warm, your plants will not be able to take up any nutrients (and therefor they will not grow). Worse yet, the nutrient solution will begin to favor a number of pathogenic micro-organisms at a warmer temperature....nasty things like fusarium and pythium. The ideal temperature for your nutrient solution is 65 to 70*F. If your garden is in the basement, keeping the nutrient reservoir on the concrete floor will usually keep it at an ideal temperature.

Avoid Tilapia that's farm raised in China | lfespock on Xanga

Avoid Tilapia that's farm raised in China | lfespock on Xanga | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
Charlie Dare's insight:

(However, farm-raised tilapia (the least expensive and most popular) has a high fat content (though low in saturated fats). According to research published in July 2008, farm-raised tilapia may be worse for the heart than eating bacon or a hamburger. The research suggests the nutritional value of farm-raised tilapia may be compromised by the amount of corn included in the feed. The corn contains short-chain omega-6s that contribute to the buildup of these materials in the fish. "Ratios of long-chain omega-6 to long-chain omega-3, AA to EPA respectively, in tilapia averaged about 11:1, compared to much less than 1:1 (indicating more EPA than AA) in both salmon and trout." Widespread publicity encouraging people to eat more fish has seen tilapia being purchased by those with lower incomes who are trying to eat a well-balanced diet. The lower amounts of omega-3 and the higher ratios of omega-6 compounds in US farmed tilapia raise questions of the health benefits of consuming this fish.[8]")

Commercial Aquaponic Funding Secured ...A First For Australian Sector Development | PRLog

Commercial Aquaponic Funding Secured ...A First For Australian Sector Development. Funding for training a commercial sector in integrated farming called aquaponics will be underway in May 2011.
Charlie Dare's insight:

This seems to have got little publicity.Never knew existance of an Northern Adelaide Plains Gawler River Region but will investigate further as I,ve been passing through this region since I was doing Aquaculture at Flinders Uni.?

~Researcher and certified trainer and assessor Andrew Dezsery said “Until now, no official support or funding in Australia has been made available to develop these sustainable bio-technology sectors further. Additionally, increasing bureaucratic legislation and mono cropping mentality makes it harder for farmers to provide food for this lucky country thereby sending some farmers off their land.”
