Grow up, not out, with vertical gardening
San Antonio Current (blog)
Technically, vertical gardening is any procedure or structure that uses vertical, rather than horizontal, growing space.
Charlie Dare's insight:

Many new variations in vertical gardening and Aquaponics .Yet to find a story that coverstopic comprehensively like rotating roof top towers in equatorial zones to 24 hour lighting to cover shadow and keep up grow rate further north or south from the equator, but upwards is the space saving direction of course.

Everything you need to know about this sustainable, productive and water-efficient way of gardening.
Charlie Dare's insight:

In highly productive systems where you are pumping through crops of fish in big numbers, or where your fish get really big, you may need to combine the biological filtration of plants with a separate mechanical filtration process and this is where talking to an expert really helps. Water management is key and the monitoring of your system is the only technical part of the process of keeping aquaponics.

Venture aims to be world’s largest aquaponics farm – From the Santa Cruz Sentinel

Venture aims to be world’s largest aquaponics farm – From the Santa Cruz Sentinel | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it

By Donna Jones WATSONVILLE — Hundreds of native sturgeon, the largest no more than six-inches long, swim inside a 305-gallon barrel in a greenhouse on Coward Road. The water, containing their waste, is pumped out and through a series of biological filters before flowing into long troughs upon which float rafts of leafy greens. The plants’ roots dangle into the water, feeding on the nutrients generated by the fish waste and cleaning the water for circulation back into the fish tank. This is Viridis Aquaponics, a Pajaro Valley start-up with global ambitions.

Via Jim Hall
Charlie Dare's insight:

The interesting point to focus on as Aquaponics systems grow in size is the high inputs of automation. You can scale down from an automated Aquaponics/hydroponics system BUT you cant scale up from a hobby system seems to be the current thinking by professional growers.

Now it is possible to build any design home as a monolithic concrete indestructible structure, the dome is the strongest but hardest to get a construction loan for.

11 Acre Fish Farm for sale

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxoAN94jte0

Not knowing the diameter of each pond shown my business plan had my company been allowed to develop it would have been to use individual concrete dome pods with mounted solar / wind system to create an off the grid Aqauarium / Vertical hydroponic grow room using a 10 ft in diameter concrete base as my foot print.  Before I could develop this plan DeSoto County accused my company WITHOUT EVIDENCE that it was mfg. for resale on my newly purchase fish farm and now because the State of Florida did not enforce my rights initally must agree with the no evidence verdict of an illegal court and so my fish farm never go developed and the conspiracy continues.

How to lower and raise pH in aquaponics systems

The key to having healthy fish and vegetables is having good pH in Aquaponics systems. This video is about working with pH in new system and release fish int...
Charlie Dare's insight:

I have posted on this important aspect before but this organic grower is worth another look at.Some fish species will eat the introduced fingerlings of course and balancing close to neutral a system first he mentions~ You can also raise pH with a 50/50 mix of potassium hydroxide & calcium hydroxide, slowly adding to bring to desired pH. This also is a source of potassium and calcium for the biology and needs to be in balance in order to be available to the plants. Also a better average pH for most plants is between 6-6.4.

Learning from those with successful systems is best. Its always subjective to local conditions like weather that can be adjusted for with green houses or shade to keep both fish and vegetables or fruit in their closest to natural environment~

Advantage of an air pump is it wont burn out like a water pump with no water. Both installed for a back up with a float switch is probably ideal.Always have emergency ideas workable if power outs..Fish dont live long with out aeration ~ Solenoids can turn on emergency oxygen infusion through air stones if recirculation pumps stop. Also if fish arnt eaten till very big then it might be an idea to split off water through a biofilter as well as grow beds to denitrify the returning water. The PVC butterfly valve illustrated in video sprays water out adding extra aeration ~

Charlie Dare's insight:

Here is the hope that they can make a user friendly tool~Interested to see if some urban myths perpetuated by grain fed Tilapia and tested bad fats in studies to be unhealthy compared to other species grown on a natural diet. Some omnivores(vegetarian small insects) like Silver /Jade Perch have the worlds highest Omega3 healthy oil.Because of the ease of growing a rubbish fish that survives in crowded poor quality water conditions some Aquaponics growers persist in ignoring/ questioning the" Study" denial of inconvenient facts. They would sell it as "healthy fish" even if it were grown in a sewage drain as some Chinese product might as well be, it is fed faeces(shit) from farm animals.A Southeast Asian practice not to blame just China ,polyculture poultry pens above ponds pigs etc is wide spread as are health problems. The race to the bottom is not the way...Value for money IS  quality assured. A fresh clean green product involves rethinking the best produce you can grow, like heritage tomatoes that taste nice.Excess can be dried stored in olive oil or air tight containers.
