Comment on Biological Control by Alex Veidel

Comment on Biological Control by Alex Veidel | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
I highly recommend Green Methods for IPM products. I’ve used their predatory mites and predatory midge larva with great success.
Charlie Dare's insight:

We call them Ladybirds, beetles down under(Australia) and there are a number of varieties and colours. I,m familiar with the red coated and yellow ones and don`t they just love Aphids.I,m sure we are not allowed to import bugs from over seas, as in the past we`ve had so many environmental disasters like the cane toads.

This chart maybe handy for our north American friends in the battle to maintain a clean green solution to pests, that may get past your screened grow beds air vents. The bugs decimate and harm plants growth by devouring the leaves or sap ~Fungus and molds may be controlled by humidity control (ventilation) and non toxic sprays ~

Bio -security is very important to a sustainable venture and many fish farms I,ve visited have a foot bath as well in case you bring pathogens on to the farm.Green houses often have a 2 doorway entrance as once bugs get established they multiply very rapidly ~ Prevention is always better than a cure if possible ~

Charlie Dare's insight:

Another from Dr Nate Storey on 3 main systems " Media-based systems include IBC based systems and media beds. These are typically simple and inexpensive but difficult to scale.

- DWC (Deep Water Culture)/raft systems are common for commercial growing. Made popular by Dr. Rakocy at the Univeristy of Virgin Islands during the 80′s through 90′s, raft system design has not changed significantly in the past few decades.

- Vertical systems are a recent development. This is what we at Bright Agrotech use, because they use space efficiently and allow us to do live sales, which means reduced labor costs. There are a few tower designs out there, but we prefer our ZipGrow towers."Quote from You tube under this episode~

But even under the best conditions, even fish that are reared for aquaponics, at least 70% of newly hatched fish still die.
Charlie Dare's insight:

In my area most people buy from a certified disease free hatchery~ I had a council inspection for change of land use for an weather-board house and to breed fish in tanks was as much compliance extra costs as if it were a butcher shop including wheelchair access male female toilets and reinforced flooring, so much things and cost A small aquarium set up may be a better way to grow some Sleepy Cod replacements. Its not straight forward water levels need to be lowered warmish water temperatures to induce spawning injection of hormones sterilized beakers for mixing milt and  mature cover and wait 24-36 hours to examine for cell division in eggs..preparation of artemia or sea monkeys need slight bath in acidic warm water so baby fingerling's dont choke on shells of sea monkeys after hatching.. other green water production has a cross section of edible foods algae  but ponds fertilized have a much better cross section of larval fingerlings food source after they use up their egg sack after hatching~

Aquaculture equipment specialist Fusion Marine is participating in a multi-partnership project to develop a sea based lobster rearing system that could ultimately benefit coastal communities.

Charlie Dare's insight:

"A far sighted project ...Increasingly the charity The National Lobster Hatchery sees its role as a scientific one "

The National Lobster Hatchery

The NLH is a far sighted project established in 2000 by the Cornwall Sea Fisheries Committee.  It became a charity in 2004 and operates as a Social Enterprise.  It was set up to operate a stock enhancement and public engagement programme, encouraging scientists and fishermen to collaborate whilst seeding lobsters on their fishing grounds.  Increasingly the charity sees its role as a scientific centre, that seeks to understand better how to restock a fishery (should stocks collapse) or how to make an existing fishery more productive (in the light of soaring global seafood demand).

Charlie Dare's insight:
In the Aquaponics field there are constant developments by innovative and creative people~ New species trialled, you can grow ornamental fish such as Koi and make a decent profit from them and others like trout as in this very good "Spiral-ponics".Others like Martin Fisk in South Africa build on existing systems like his "CHOP3"( Constant Height One Pump2 ) a Murray Hallum design.. Grow beds for fruiting crops and floating rafts(salads) as sump, cheap one pump power system~ There are also an increasing variety of innovations like Matins to take the more nutrient rich water from base of a swirl filter adding extra small quantities of minerals to get better fruiting crops like tomatoes and capsicums, peppers. In addition to these niche marketable health herbs like Brahmi exotic ones spicy Bock Choi, like I grow Vietnamese mint and hot peppers to be ground up and combined with garlic to make a bug spray ~ Duck weed for fish food and so forth.I lost my yabbies( crustaceans) last winter due to frosty nights and now intend the addition of a solar heating loop ~
