Our constant flow gravel bed system grows lettuce about 20% better than a reciprocal flow. Gravel beds and floating rafts are about 15-20% more efficient than NFT. My experiments have proven, within an aquaponic context, that NFT is less efficient at plant growth and nutrient stripping.

The last key finding is that we need to use a potassium and calcium-based buffer system. Fish farmers use sodium bicarbonate and similar basic salts to make sure the pH doesn’t drop. Fish systems are the opposite to hydroponic systems – as fish eat and metabolise feed, the water pH drops.

To counteract this pH drop, we use buffers to keep the pH up around 7. If we use potassium and calcium-based buffers, we can add the potassium and calcium to the system that the plants require for good growth.

KEY RESEARCH FINDINGS
So I had better tell you of the key findings. Fish (we used Murray Cod) and plants (we used lettuce) can be grown in an integrated aquaponic system. If the correct balance is met between plants and fish, no nutrient build-up occurs in the system, and the plants get all the nutrients they need."

The coverage of living corals on Australia's Great Barrier Reef could decline to less than 10 percent if ocean warming continues, according to a new study that explores the short- and long-term consequences of environmental changes to the reef.


Environmental change has caused the loss of more than half the world's reef building corals. Coral cover, a measure of the percentage of the seafloor covered by living coral, is now just 10-20 percent worldwide. The Great Barrier Reef, once thought to be one of the more pristine global reef systems, has lost half of its coral cover in only the last 27 years. Overfishing, coastal pollution and increased greenhouse gas emissions leading to increased temperatures and ocean acidification, as well as other human impacts are all affecting the delicate balance maintained in coral reef ecosystems.


Now, in a new study that aims to project the composition of the future Great Barrier Reef under current and future environmental scenarios, researchers found that in the long term, moderate warming of 1-2 degrees Celsius would result in a high probability of coral cover declining to less than 10 percent, a number thought to be important for maintaining reef growth.


In the short term, with increasing temperatures as well as local man-made threats like coastal development, pollution, and over-fishing, the study found that corals—tiny animals related to jellyfish—would be over-run by seaweed which would, in effect, suffocate them. In the longer term, interactions among reef organisms would lead to dominance by other groups, including sponges and soft corals known as gorgonians.


The study, now in pre-print online in the journal Ecology, uses a multivariate statistical model and includes quantitative surveys of 46 reef habitats over 10 years of data from 1996-2006.

Most growers want easiest care, low water quality survivors, rubbish fish that eat anything , while basking in the delusion that they are clean green producers.Trout and Silver Perch have the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids–the heart-healthy and essential fish oils touted by health and nutrition experts as the main reason to eat fish frequently~ The Trout family is ideal for cooler climates requiring good water quality and oxygenation on a high protein diet except for Brook Trout ~ The Silver Perch are a omnivorous and hardy warm fresh water fish along with a cousin Jade Perch a marketing name for Chinese buyers appeal more so than Barcoo Grunter[ Scortum barcoo is a species of fish in the family Terapontidae]~ Both will handle similar warm poor water quality to Tilapia with out the negative health aspects conveniently ignored by most American/Asian growers like it or not !

You can run 160kg/m3 raising Tilapia but you need a high level of skills and systems to do that.For 5 times the return or more for smoked trout grown at safer densities I ,d advise marketing the premium priced fish with beneficial omega-3 fatty acids ~

An international team of 18 researchers provide new evidence of significant changes in four of the nine systems which regulate the resilience of the Earth. One of the systems which has been seriously affected is the nitrogen-phosphorus cycle which is essential to all life, and is particularly important to both food production and the maintenance of clean water.


"People depend on food, and food production depends on clean water," says Prof. Elena Bennett from McGill's School of the Environment who contributed the research on the nitrogen-phosphorus cycle to the study. "This new data shows that our ability both to produce sufficient food in the future and to have clean water to drink and to swim in are at risk."


The research fixing new planetary boundaries (which represent thresholds or tipping points beyond which there will be irreversible and abrupt environmental change) was published today in the journal Science. It suggests that changes to the Earth's climate, biosphere integrity (a concept covering loss of biodiversity and species extinction), and land-system (through deforestation for example) represent a risk for current and future societies. The fourth process which has become significantly compromised is the nitrogen-phosphorus cycle, which affects both the water we drink and our ability to produce food.


Key points:

The concept of planetary boundaries has been updated with new assessments and quantifications.Climate change and biosphere integrity identified as core planetary boundaries. Significantly altering either of these "core boundaries" would "drive the Earth System into a new state".Four boundaries are assessed to have been crossed, placing humanity in a danger zone: climate change, loss of biosphere integrity (biodiversity loss and species extinction), land-system change, altered biogeochemical cycles (fertiliser use - phosphorus and nitrogen).Crossing boundaries raises the risks to current and future societies of destabilising the Earth System – the complex interactions of land, ocean, atmosphere, ice sheets, life and people.Internationally agreed upper climate limit of 2 degrees lies beyond the climate change boundary: which makes 2 degrees a risky target for humanity, and therefore an absolute minimum target for the global climate negotiations.

"Axis of evil " was a term used by Reagan but is just as applicable to planet destroying nations that really need direct action to bring them to brook for their irresponsible behaviour~
