Sustainably Grown Blackworm Identified as a Alternative Aquaculture Feed

Sustainably Grown Blackworm Identified as a Alternative Aquaculture Feed | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
NETHERLANDS - New research is now taking place into the plant-fed blackworm as an alternative feed for farmed fish.
Charlie Dare's insight:

Research to grow a big volumn goes on for another year feeding worms apple and wheat in a cyclinder through which only their heads can access the waste food .

These worms convert low-grade materials into high-grade food substances such as proteins, sugars and fats. Their food source consists of plant waste. On average they grow to 6 cm long and weigh between 6 and 10 mg. They reproduce by constantly splitting in two. As all worms consist of an old and a new part, it is not possible to determine how old they are. - See more at: http://www.thefishsite.com/fishnews/21294/sustainably-grown-blackworm-identified-as-a-alternative-aquaculture-feed?sthash.E47uCcnA.mjjo&goback=%2Egde_3681570_member_274880482#%21

Charlie Dare's insight:
Adding words to flood and drain grow beds is not new but this guy adds his worms to another guppie water tank.Like comments suggest "Earthworms aren't aquatic creatures, they will prob drown and rot down there.""Earthworms r not aquatic creatures. There is no reason by natural behavior for them to live in an aquatic environment. I believe worms will eventually drown. That's why earthworms live in the soil. Anytime u go against nature's intended design, there is always a negative consequence."Waffling on the guy seems to be saying they live with the guppies and get oxygen from his airstone ??

Scientists discover key to easing aquaculture's reliance on wild-caught fish

Scientists discover key to easing aquaculture's reliance on wild-caught fish | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
For the first time scientists have been able to develop a completely vegetarian diet that works for marine fish raised in aquaculture, the key to making aquaculture a sustainable industry as the world's need for protein increases
Charlie Dare's insight:
"Aquaculture isn't sustainable because it takes more fish to feed fish than are being produced," said Dr. Aaron Watson. "But a new vegetarian diet might change everything." Read more at: https://phys.org/news/2013-08-scientists-key-easing-aquaculture-reliance.html#jCp

The team's next steps will be to investigate if the benefits of the butyrate supplement can also be found in the protein and bacteria composition found in the digestive system: "It is a big challenge to understand how these functional features are modified by genetic and epigenetic factors and an important step towards establishing gilthead sea bream as a powerful model for the development of sustainable and heathy fish feeds," says Dr Pérez-Sanchez.
