These beautiful delicious and protein rich mushroom was grown using a proprietary system developed by Mike Duncan in Lake-fo-the-Ozarks Missouri.  It was produced in ten days using a modular growing methodology called The High Tech Mushroom Growing System, (HTMGS)
Technology
These wonderful mushrooms and many others can be profitably grown in an affordable modular unit.  The HTMGS employs a monitoring and control system that senses light levels, humidity, PH levels, temperature, air exchange rates.  The system also provides for feedback and self adjust various key elements like, light, temperature, and humidity.  Application of these modern production and food growing methods are creating a revolution in the ability of small farmers to produce a wide range of healthy nutritious mushrooms.

Charlie Dare's insight:

~

Good aspects of this system:

- pre-drilled holes means you don’t have to destroy the inner bucket in order to get a flush of mushrooms.

- all the components are re-usable for many rounds of mushroom cultivation.

- the whole caboodle is robust, transportable, and slightly (every little bit counts) better insulated than thin-wall plastic mushroom bags.

- The size of the bucket means you can have lots of fruiting holes, which in turn means lots of mushrooms!

Of course, to use these, you have to already have made your grain or sawdust spawn, for which there is a how-to here. And you need your mycelium, of course.

Carbon Dioxide Levels Climb Into Uncharted Territory for Humans - Highest since 800,000 Years

Carbon Dioxide Levels Climb Into Uncharted Territory for Humans - Highest since 800,000 Years | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it

The amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere has exceeded 402 parts per million (ppm) during the past two days of observations, which is higher than at any time in at least the past 800,000 years, according to readings from monitoring equipment on a mountaintop in Hawaii. Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is the most important long-lived greenhouse gas responsible for manmade global warming, and it is building up in the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.

Once emitted, a single molecule of carbon dioxide can remain aloft for hundreds of years, which means that the effects of today's industrial activities will be felt for the next several centuries, if not thousands of years. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, such as methane, warm the planet by absorbing and redirecting outgoing solar radiation that would otherwise escape back into space.

In 2013, atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide briefly hit 400 ppm for the first time in mid-May, but this year that symbolic threshold has been crossed even earlier. This means it is more likely that the annual peak, which typically occurs in mid-to-late May, will climb further above 400 ppm for the first time.

Although crossing above 400 ppm is largely a symbolic milestone, scientific research indicates that the higher that carbon dioxide concentrations get, the more global temperatures will increase, resulting in a wide range of damaging effects. These impacts will range from global sea level rise to a heightened risk of heat waves, severe droughts and floods, according to a recently released comprehensive assessment of climate science produced by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Modern carbon dioxide monitoring began in 1958 on the peak of Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano, which is more than two miles high. At that time, carbon dioxide concentrations were at just 313 ppm. They have risen rapidly and steadily since then, both at Mauna Loa and at other observatories around the world. The chart documenting this rise is perhaps the most iconic in all of climate science, known as the "Keeling Curve" for Charles David Keeling, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist who began and maintained the monitoring program.

According to the Keeling Curve website, carbon dioxide concentrations spiked to 402.20 parts per million on April 7, whereas data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) showed a slightly lower level of 402.11 parts per million on the same day. Both data sets indicate that daily carbon dioxide measurements have been at or above 400 ppm since March 29, and the graph appears on course to stay above 400 ppm throughout the rest of the month and into the next.

Fish Tank Guide

Fish Tank Guide | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
DIY Aquaponics Information about what you need to consider for a fish tank
Charlie Dare's insight:

A rounded shape also allows for much easier water circulation and flow in the fish tanks, and this has several distinct benefits for water quality and fish health:

•  Still water will naturally 'layer' or stratify into different temperature bands and so good water circulation prevents this type of thermal layering and thus helps to improve water quality.

•  A good flow of water provides the fish with a current to swim against, which increases their health   and the quality of their flesh if the fish are for consumption.

•  The fish also seem to naturally enjoy playing in currents or waterfalls of water.

•  Good water movement also prevents a layer of protein forming on the surface of the water, which could inhibit the exchange of gases between the air and the water.

•  Good water movement increases the surface area of the tank. With the surface water constantly changing you dramatically increase the rate of oxygen exchange.

•  Increased oxygen benefits not only your fish, but also the de-nitrifying bacteria in your system, as well as inhibiting harmful bacteria that thrive in an anaerobic environment.

•  In a rounded tank, solid waste will often gravitate toward the bottom centre of the tank - strategic placement of your pump will pick up almost all of the solid waste quickly.

Want extra Vitamin D? Place your shiitake mushrooms in sunlight... | Aquaponics~Aquaculture~Fish~Food | Scoop.it
As if growing your own mushrooms wasn't excellent enough, there's also a way you can further increase their Vitamin D content... simply by putting them in sunlight. And not increase that Vitamin D ...
Charlie Dare's insight:

When exposed to sunlight for two days, shiitake and button mushrooms inherently increase their Vitamin D content.

And it’s not a small increase. Their Vitamin D content soars. To 460 times that of a non-sun-exposed mushrooms.

The best bit? It’s not only fresh mushrooms that seem to take on this increase in Vitamin D. Dried mushrooms can also increase rapidly in Vitamin D if previously not exposed to sunlight.Note~ TWO DAYS is the sweet spot and slicing because of more exposed surface area also increases your Vit D dose ~
