At the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility, a specific strain of Atlantic salmon are being researched to determine the success of raising them in closed containment systems. The mission is to conduct research on sustainable aquaculture in northern climates and to share this knowledge through public education. This is done by conducting applied research, providing training and workshops and educational opportunities and developing best management practices for a sustainable and environmental aquaculture industry. Currently, the facility is working collaboratively with a private company to explore the development of an Atlantic salmon broodstock and the progeny for possible future use in food-fish aquaculture.

The steady growth of Florida Organic Aquaculture, LLC’s shrimp production facility reflects the high consumer demand for American-raised, additive-free, sustainably produced shrimp. It also reflects the critical role of automation in the efficient commercial production of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), where small changes in the growing environment can have huge impacts.
The Newport Aquarium was founded in May of 1999. They have 137 aquatic tanks, 90 of them are exhibits for the public. And the largest tank is the shark tank, the surrounded by sharks exhibit. It is a 385,000 gallon saltwater tank. They're using the YSI 5200A on this system to keep continuous water quality monitoring for two reasons. Modest levels of nitrate nitrogen – in the 75 to 100 mg/L range – may be more harmful to aquaculture-raised rainbow trout than producers realize. A team of scientists at the Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute led by John Davidson documented deformities and significant behavioral changes in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) raised in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) with nitrate nitrogen concentrations at levels less than one-tenth the recommended maximum nitrate nitrogen level of 1,000 mg/L. They believe the changes were spurred by chronic exposure to nitrate nitrogen.
Potomac River. Oyster aquaculture in the Potomac River estuary could result in significant improvements to water quality, according to a new study. All of the nitrogen currently polluting the Potomac River estuary could be removed if 40 percent of its river bed were used for shellfish cultivation, according to the joint study. The researchers determined that a combination of aquaculture and restored oyster reefs may provide even larger overall ecosystem benefits. Oysters, who feed by filtering, can clean an enormous volume of water of algae which can cause poor water quality.
