NY-based fund takes control of Andromeda fish farming | Aquaculture Directory

NY-based fund takes control of Andromeda fish farming | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Andromeda is set to be the first Greek aquaculture company to be sold to an international fund, and it is believed that the local fish farming sector’s two biggest players, Selonda and Nireus, may be fated to follow a similar course.

On Monday Global Finance, the group controlled by Angelos Plakopitas, announced the sale of 90 percent of its holding in Andromeda to the Amerra Capital Management LLC fund, which is based in New York.

Although the price has not been announced, market sources cited by Undercurrent News – an international website specialising in seafood developments – say that this amounts to eight times Andromeda’s profits in 2015.

The Greek company’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation amounted to 6.5 million euros in 2014, while the 2015 financial results have not yet been issued. On a group level, sales amounted to 111.8 million euros in 2014.

Greenpeace hits John West where it hurts – at sea, on land and in the shops | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Through a series of coordinated actions, Greenpeace has disrupted John West’s operations at every point of its supply chain from sea to shelf as international pressure grows on the embattled company to stop reneging on its promises and move towards producing 100 percent sustainable tuna.

This morning 25 activists targeted a major processing facility in Brittany, France belonging to Thai Union, the owner of John West. While on Saturday teams of volunteers cleared the shelves of tinned John West tuna in more than 50 Sainsbury’s stores throughout the UK.

The protesters blockaded the facilities and locked themselves to large tuna cans to challenge Thai Union’s continued links to destructive fishing practices including the use of fish-aggregating devices [FADs] which can result in the accidental catching of all kinds of marine life including sharks.

Ground-breaking illegal fishing accord soon to enter into force | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
FAO Port State Measures Agreement set to become binding law

Illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing is about to become much more difficult thanks to the imminent entry into force of the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA), a ground-breaking international accord championed by FAO.

Now that the required threshold has been reached, with 30 Members having formally deposited their instruments of adherence, the count down to the entry into force of the PSMA is underway and on 5 June 2016 the world's first ever binding international accord specifically targeting IUU fishing will become international law.

Collectively, the 29 countries and the European Union, which signed as a single party, have formally committed themselves through their instruments of adhesion to the Agreement account for more than 62 percent of worldwide fish imports and 49 percent of fish exports, which were $133 billion and $139 billion respectively, in 2013.

ASC invites stakeholders to comment on Group Certification methodology | Aquaculture Directory

ASC invites stakeholders to comment on Group Certification methodology | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
The ASC has published the latest draft of the Group Certification methodology and is currently seeking public comment on the new approach.

Public consultation period: 20 May - 20 June 2016

As the majority of global aquaculture production is done by small to medium-sized farmers, it is vital to ensure that the ASC programme evolves to accommodate farms of all sizes. Group certification is an opportunity to expand the number of farms eligible to participate in the certification scheme.

The project is a key milestone in the ASC's mission to move the industry towards environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

Conservation group’s claims slammed | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
A campaign launched by a Northern Hemisphere conservation group targeting the New Zealand fishing industry is based on inaccurate allegations, Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Tim Pankhurst says.

Nabu International is calling on fast food chain McDonald’s to drop New Zealand fish to “save Maui dolphins”. “McDonald’s use New Zealand hoki. Maui dolphins are not found in the deepwater where hoki are caught, Mr Pankhurst says.

“Nabu claimed a Maui dolphin death through fishing was suppressed. This is false. We invite them to correct the record.

“Conservation measures for the prevention of Maui dolphin captures are working, with no sightings or captures of the dolphin in more than 1961 observer days since 2012.

Disease found in salmon on one fish farm in B.C. but more research needed: study | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Scientists have detected a potential disease in farmed Atlantic salmon for the first time in B.C., but say more research is needed to determine if it could affect wild populations of the fish.

Dr Kristi Miller, head of the molecular genetics research program in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, says pathologists found lesions on salmon on one farm in Johnstone Strait indicating they had heart and skeletal muscle inflammation.

Miller says the lesions were present for at least eight months.

Commercial fishermen: Net ban would destroy N.C. seafood industry | Aquaculture Directory

Commercial fishermen: Net ban would destroy N.C. seafood industry | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

A state House bill first introduced 16 years ago has been resurrected that would ban the use of large trawling nets in state waters, a move that the commercial fishing industry says could destroy the livelihood for most North Carolina fishermen.

New Bern native Billy Richardson, D¬-Cumberland, filed a bill that would let voters decide whether to outlaw gill and certain other nets in all state coastal waters. If the N.C. General Assembly supports House Bill 1122, the binding referendum would be on the November election ballot.

“It would be the end of North Carolina’s (commercial) fishery,” said Wayne Dunbar, a waterman for nearly 40 years, located in Pamlico County’s Paradise Shores on Lower Broad Creek, leading into the Pamlico Sound. “People that don’t fish wouldn’t get North Carolina seafood.”
