Public health officials are investigating the possibility that a rare and sometimes fatal bacterial infection came from fish purchased from live tanks at a local store. 

A King County man was diagnosed with a bacterial infection caused by Vibrio vulnificus after preparing and consuming fish purchased from the live fish tanks at this store. Public Health cautions anyone who has come into contact with raw fish to seek medical care if they develop symptoms of the infection.

Last year was not a good year to be fishing for Alaskan pink salmon. The run was so pitiful, in fact, it was designated a natural disaster by the federal government, though the fisheries may not receive relief funding. 

Prince William Sound has supplied almost half of the state’s return of pink salmon in recent years, and saw a historically weak harvest of just over 13 million fish last year.

The UK's federations proposed the development of a voluntary safety management system (SMS) to help co-ordinate the preparation of the ILO C188 Work in Fishing Convention due early next year.

With the release of a new benchmark report, Monterey Bay Aquarium has recognised Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified tilapia as equivalent or better to their Seafood Watch yellow rating—the colour associated with their Good Alternative category.  

The recommendation comes after an independent review of the standard by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program.

The campaign, which coincides with National Fishing Month (21 July – 3 September), will provide life-saving advice and encourage anglers to be aware and look around for overhead electricity lines so they can stay safe when fishing.

Mediterranean Aquaculture Integrated Development is a new EU H2020 research project which brings together over 30 organisations from 12 different countries to improve aquaculture in the Mediterranean. 

Europe consumes twice as much seafood as it produces, with imports filling the gap. Aquaculture accounts for about 20% of production in Europe and directly employs around 85,000 people, mostly in rural and coastal areas.
