The retailer recently received Chain of Custody certification, which enables them to offer a variety of certified seafood to its customers at their fresh fish counters in 30 stores. Carrefour has set the ambition that by 2020 half of the seafood bought in their stores will be responsibly farmed or sustainably caught. 

The range of certified seafood on sale in Carrefour's stores is expected to increase in the coming months. The introduction of certified seafood at Carrefour's fresh fish counters, including Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified cod, is driven by their policy to preserve marine biodiversity

Salmon farming companies in B.C. are continuing to achieve the high sustainability commitments they have set. Cermaq Canada has announced that its Mussel Rock farm, located in Clayoquot Sound on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, has been certified to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) salmon standard. 

This is the company’s third farm to reach the standard. There are currently six farms in B.C. certified to the ASC standard with a further five farms undergoing assessment

After months of waiting, Vietnam’s public finally has an explanation to the mysterious fish die-off that started in early April, lasted two to three weeks, and devastated the local fishing industry. 

As some suspected, the cause was pollution from a new Taiwanese steel factory, the government’s environment ministry said today (June 30) in much-anticipated press conference. 

It isn’t often that a nation’s military is called upon to bury tons of dead fish, but that’s just what Vietnamese soldiers were doing a few months ago, after government researchers determined that “toxic elements” were responsible for the massive die-off of fish, clams, and other marine life.

Governments, scientists and producers have expressed the need for a consensus on ways to fight acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) in cultured shrimp. 

AHPND, commonly known as ‘early mortality syndrome’ (EMS), is a deadly non-viral disease that continues to seriously threaten the world’s shrimp farming sector. 

Outbreaks of AHPND caught the entire shrimp industry, scientists and governments by surprise as early as 2009 and continue to plague the sector.
