Building Caribbean resources to ensure safe seafood and protect and grow fisheries exports | Aquaculture Directory

Building Caribbean resources to ensure safe seafood and protect and grow fisheries exports | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Caribbean countries have a living bank of marine resources from which they collectively cash out hundreds of millions of dollars a year to support emerging national economies by providing good jobs, food and foreign exchange, among other benefits.

However, in order to remain active and competitive in the global marketplace, countries have had to find ways to surmount the challenges posed by stringent international standards called sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, for food safety and for protection against diseases carried animals and plants.

Under an EU-funded SPS Measures Project, the ability of Caribbean countries to effectively address those challenges is being strengthened through initiatives such as specialised training for those gatekeepers who help to ensure the safety of both imported and exported foods.

New land-based fish farm planned in Sur | Aquaculture Directory

New land-based fish farm planned in Sur | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
The Omani government has planned to set up in Sur a major bio-marine industrial cluster, anchored by the nation’s first ever land-based fish farm, as part of its efforts to kick-start the development of a successful aquaculture industry in Oman, said a report.

The Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), which administers the nation’s industrial parks and logistics hubs, has earmarked an 8,000 sq m plot at Sur Industrial Estate for the establishment of the project, which unlike conventional aquaculture farms, will be developed onshore for the rearing of marine fish, said the Oman Daily Observer report.

UK Fisheries, DFFU and Doggerbank Group saithe fishery recertified as sustainable | Aquaculture Directory

UK Fisheries, DFFU and Doggerbank Group saithe fishery recertified as sustainable | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
The UK Fisheries, DFFU and Doggerbank Group saithe fishery – an international grouping of fishing companies – has been recertified against the world’s most robust standard for environmentally sustainable fishing.

A 12 month, rigorous assessment by independent certifier, ME Certification LTD (MEC) has shown that the saithe fishery continues to meet the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) demanding Fisheries Standard.

As a result, any products from this fishery, may continue carrying the MSC ecolabel, identifying their origin from a sustainable source. A sustainable commitment The fishery first achieved MSC certification in January 2011.

Every five years, fisheries in the MSC programme have to go through the full assessment process again to make sure they are continuing to meet the MSC Fisheries Standard.

This reassessment showed a key strength of the fishery through their management system; specifically the control measures with strict monitoring and enforcement by EU, Norwegian and Russian authorities under joint agreements including a discard ban – 100% of all fish caught is landed. The fishery was recertified unconditionally for another five years.

BP drops US$1b seafood industry spill payments fight | Aquaculture Directory

BP drops US$1b seafood industry spill payments fight | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
After fighting for more than two years to avoid paying almost US$1 billion in oil spill damages to Gulf Coast shrimpers, oystermen and seafood processors it claimed didn't exist, BP Plc has thrown in the towel.

A federal judge in New Orleans Monday allowed BP to drop its bid to avoid paying the second half of US$2.3 billion in compensation promised to seafood interests harmed by the blown-out well.

The subsea gusher pumped more than 4 million barrels of crude into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, closing fisheries and blackening the shores of five states.

BP claimed lawyers negotiating on behalf of the seafood industry fraudulently inflated the number of Southeast Asian immigrant fishermen and boat hands claiming damages from the spill.

Associated Seafoods calls for Scottish Smoked Salmon Protection | Aquaculture Directory

Associated Seafoods calls for Scottish Smoked Salmon Protection | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
A seafood firm has called for Scottish-produced smoked salmon to be granted protected status. Moray-based Associated Seafoods said producers in other countries such as France and the US had "misappropriated" the Scottish tag for smoked salmon.

It wants the product to be granted protected geographical indication (PGI) status. This would mean smoked salmon produced in other nations could not be packaged, sold or advertised as Scottish.

Both farmed and wild Scottish salmon already have protected status. Earlier this week, an American salmon supplier was fined and given probation for falsely claiming its fish was from Scotland when it had been imported from Chile. UpRiver Aquaculture, also known as MKG Provisions, pleaded guilty to violating a US law on false labelling of food.
