The Falmouth Board of Selectmen approved a license transfer via a split vote July 31 for a 23-acre aquaculture grant established in 1877 and believed to be the oldest of its kind in the state. 

Stipulations to the license call for the recipient, Cape Cod Oyster Company, to make certain the markers for the oyster beds don’t stray into the navigational channel in that area of Waquoit Bay, and that the company’s use of a boat ramp doesn’t hinder members of the public from launching their crafts.

The companies were drawn to one another because of their mutual, generational heritage in farming and agriculture.

An orange roughy fishery south of Stewart Island has been given the green light to reopen after 19 years. 

In 1998, the seafood industry agreed to cease fishing in the ORH3B Puysegur area to rest the fishery to allow stocks to rebuild. Over the past 19 years the industry has contracted a number of research surveys from NIWA and CSIRO to monitor the rebuild and to inform a new stock assessment in 2017.

The meeting reviewed the progress made since the Twenty-fifth session of the CWP and agreed on the actions for the second part of the intersessional period prior to the upcoming Twenty-sixth session of the CWP to be held prior to February 2019.

Planning Board members on Sept. 5 unanimously approved a site plan from the Corea Lobster Co-op for construction of a refrigeration facility for its herring, according to Board Chairman Ray Jones. Jones said about 45 or 50 people attended the meeting. 

The site plan review was the only item on the board’s agenda. Neighbours who own property within 1,000 feet of the site where the facility will be built were notified as required by law of the meeting and given a chance to voice their concerns.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has awarded funding of more than £200,000 to five projects that will aid small scale and developing world fisheries in achieving sustainability. 

The award is part of the MSC’s Global Fisheries Sustainability Fund that was established in 2015 in recognition of the difficulty that these fisheries have in reaching the MSC Standard.

Seafood dealers have recovered 98 percent of the mussels that were recalled after being harvested in an area of Down East Maine currently experiencing an algae bloom that produces a potentially deadly biotoxin. 

Officials estimate 58,480 pounds of mussels were affected by the recall initiated Friday. In a statement Tuesday, the Maine Department of Marine Resources said 57,492 pounds, or 98 percent of the impacted product, had been recovered in the three days following the recall.
