Union present letter to bosses of Grimsby seafood firm in protest to overtime cuts | Aquaculture Directory

Union present letter to bosses of Grimsby seafood firm in protest to overtime cuts | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
The union representing workers at Icelandic Seachill in Grimsby have handed a letter to the firm's owners in Brussels in protest to a new workers' contract. Unite regional officer Dave Monaghan and shop steward Mark Hodson handed the letter over to the company's Icelandic owners at the Brussels Seafood Expo Global yesterday in response to proposed changes which would see workers' overtime rates cut.

As reported, bosses and workers at Icelandic Seachill's chilled site at Great Grimsby Business Park entered a 45-day consultation period in response to the introduction of the National Living Wage (NLW) on April 1.

The company said the consultation over a review to pay structures could see a reduction in overtime premiums, affecting potentially hundreds of workers. The firm said there would be an increase in the basic hourly rate above the NLW – but the union claims the overtime rate of £14.40, or double time, could drop to £9.19, an amount equivalent to time-and-a-quarter.

A STUNNING ‘wood-smoked’ meal cooked in the oven or on the BBQ – one cooking bag from Sirane truly offers retailers the chance to offer customer bags of flavour - and there's a chance to see for yourselves as we'll be exhibiting this product, among others, at the forthcoming IFFA (May 7-12) trade shows

The Sira-Cook Supreme bag is simple to use, cooks food to perfection – and can be used in almost any cooking environment, from ovens to barbecues, griddles to hot plates.

And anyone looking to sell a product with a real difference could look at our ‘smoking bag’ – a Sira-Cook Supreme bag in which a wood chip sachet enhanced with liquid smoke has been placed below the perforated non-stick layer, allowing the flavours to come through.

Simon Balderson, Sirane managing director, said: “Our new Sira-Cook Supreme cooking bag has so many potential uses – and offers numerous advantages to users. But using the bag as a ‘smoking bag’ could really help retailers offer a truly stand-out product.

ACOA funding two Cape Breton seafood ventures | Aquaculture Directory

ACOA funding two Cape Breton seafood ventures | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
The federal government announced funding Tuesday to support one of Nova Scotia’s largest exports.

Cape Breton Canso MP Rodger Cuzner was in Petit-de-Grat to say that ACOA is giving $800,000 to two Cape Breton initiatives aimed at research and development in the seafood sector.

A repayable $500,000 will go to NovaCan Live Seafood to support the company’s construction of the first live snow crab storage system.

The system, which was developed after years of research, allows crabs to be stored alive for extended periods of time allowing more export opportunities. The money will help build a facility that will be able to hold up to 150,000 pounds of live crab.

A non-repayable $301,215 investment will help Université Sainte-Anne’s Marine Research Center to establish a mobile seafood processing unit to act both as a training facility as well as a resource for the industry with the aim of alleviating labour shortages and bridging the gap between education and workforce.

Sugarloaf Wharf development now being led by marine farmers | Aquaculture Directory

Sugarloaf Wharf development now being led by marine farmers | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Sugarloaf Wharf development now being led by Coromandel Marine Farmers Association.

The proposed development of a piled wharf attached to the existing reclamation at the Sugarloaf Wharf (Te Kouma) will now be driven by the Coromandel Marine Farmers Association (CoroMFA).

Over the past year our Council has been working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the CoroMFA on options to improve the Sugarloaf Wharf facility, as part of our wider Coromandel Harbour Facilities Project.

The MOU was officially signed this week by the CoroMFA following endorsement by Council at its meeting in April. "We're really pleased to now have reached agreement with the CoroMFA on a MOU, which will see it take on the consenting and building process development at the Sugarloaf rather than it being Council's responsibility" says Mayor Glenn Leach.

Tesco – leading on sustainable seafood | Aquaculture Directory

Tesco – leading on sustainable seafood | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Tesco has announced a number of measures which will see it source even more of the seafood it sells in a sustainable way, in partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council. To achieve this, Tesco is:

• Rapidly expanding the MSC-ecolabel scheme for pre-packed and frozen fish sold in Tesco stores;
• Introducing MSC-certified fish to its 656 fish counters, making sustainable fish accessible to shoppers across the UK; and
• Ensuring that all tuna sold at Tesco stores is sourced in a sustainable way, whether own label or branded.

This month, Tesco introduced the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) ecolabel across 28 different types of chilled prepacked fish – including cod fillets, smoked kippers, haddock fishcakes and fish fingers. Next month, it will introduce the label to its 656 fish counters across the UK, and later this year will introduce it to relevant frozen fish lines too.

Seafood companies challenge Government processes through High Court | Aquaculture Directory

Seafood companies challenge Government processes through High Court | Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
Seafood companies have filed proceedings in the High Court (Statement of Claim) in response to the Government’s unilateral move to establish the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary without recognition of existing rights and contrary to international obligations under UNCLOS.

“The companies fully support marine conservation, it is inherent in their businesses, but any new measures must be taken with full considered consultation with all affected stakeholders. This has yet to occur with the Kermadecs proposal,”

New Zealand Fishing Industry Association (FIA) President Steve Bishop says. The action, led by the FIA has been filed by Solander Maritime Ltd, Sanford Ltd, Talley’s Group Ltd, Independent Fisheries Ltd, Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd, KPF Investments Ltd (United), Vela Fishing Ltd, Pupuri Taonga Limited (Sealord) and Ngai Tahu Seafood Resources Ltd, representing around 80 % of fishing quota.
This is the second legal challenge to the proposed Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary. It follows action lodged in the High Court in late March by the Maori fisheries body, Te Ohu Kaimoana, based on concerns that the proposal breaches the 1992 Deed of Settlement between Maori and the Crown.
