N.S. fishery and technology sectors to receive Federal investment - Aquaculture Directory

N.S. fishery and technology sectors to receive Federal investment - Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

The fishery and technology sectors in Nova Scotia are getting a serious boost from the federal government. A total of seven businesses in the province are splitting a $2,709,280 investment from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Rooted in economic growth and innovation, the investment will help grow these local businesses and allow them to expand their reach in the global market.

Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science and economic development as well as the minister responsible for ACOA, was in Halifax Monday to announce the investment. Scott Brison, president of the treasury board and MP for Kings-Hants, joined him.

“Nova Scotia is a place that is embracing innovation from all angles,” said Bains. “With its 10 universities, leading-edge companies and network of support organizations firmly focused on entrepreneurship and research and development, ideas come to life in Nova Scotia.”

The seven businesses are all leaders when it comes to innovation in the fishery and technology sectors. The investment will help them continue to explore new ideas, and stimulate Nova Scotia’s economy altogether.

“Firms across the economy need to compete in new ways, and firms across Nova Scotia are doing just that,” said Bains. “My overarching goal as minister is to support Canadian businesses so they can really grow, innovate and export. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is to make strategic investments in game-changers. That’s why I’m here today with the news about seven such organisations.”

SeaWeb announces Winners of 2016 Seafood Champion Awards - Aquaculture Directory

SeaWeb announces Winners of 2016 Seafood Champion Awards - Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

Seafood leaders chose a retail executive who set the bar for sustainable seafood in the United Kingdom, a Cornwall fisherman who influenced EU policy and technology innovation, a coalition of Pacific Islands nations that acted aggressively to ensure the health of their tuna fishery, and a Maldives ministry that pushed sustainability for Indian Ocean fisheries as the 2016 Seafood Champions.

The annual Seafood Champion Awards recognise individuals and organisations for excellence in promoting ocean health and environmentally responsible seafood with honours in four categories: leadership, innovation, vision and advocacy. The top honours were revealed at the opening reception of the SeaWeb Seafood Summit in Malta.

“The 2016 Seafood Champions are a diverse group, but the finalists share the qualities of incredible persistence and willingness to lead. It’s never easy to be the first to do something others believe is risky or even impossible,” said Mark Spalding, president of SeaWeb and The Ocean Foundation. “That’s why it’s so important to celebrate these Champions—they will inspire others to build on their accomplishments, and to take on the tough challenges that remain in the effort to ensure ocean health and advance seafood sustainability.”

Cooke Aquaculture Scotland invests in future with latest Fusion Marine order - Aquaculture Directory

Cooke Aquaculture Scotland invests in future with latest Fusion Marine order - Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

Fusion Marine has secured a new order for fish farm pens from Cooke Aquaculture Scotland that has brought Cooke’s total investment in new equipment to almost £1m in the last eight months.

This latest contract for four new Triton 400 pens and the refurbishment of three Oceanflex pens follows-on from a previous order in the summer of 2015 for 12 new Triton 450 pens and the upgrade of four Oceanflex pens. These new pen systems for sites on Unst and Yell in Shetland are supplied with safety decking and other ancillary equipment.

This significant investment is part of Cooke Aquaculture Scotland’s ongoing strategy to ensure it is equipped with the most modern containment systems. The company has a particularly strong presence in Unst and Yell where it employs around 65 people and is a significant contributor to the local economy.

Manufactured from tough polyethylene (PE), the Triton system has been developed specially by Fusion Marine to meet the harsh conditions experienced in exposed, open sea fish farming locations. The triple-ring Oceanflex pen system is widely used by Scottish salmon farmers and utilises the most advanced, quality assured construction techniques.

Richard Lochhead urges eligible groups to tap £83million fisheries pot - Aquaculture Directory

Richard Lochhead urges eligible groups to tap £83million fisheries pot - Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

Eight local action groups in fishing communities around Scotland have each won a share of £6.5million from the European and Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF).

Announcing the award of grants ranging from £882,000 for Orkney to nearly £1.5million for the north-east yesterday, Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead said there was more plenty cash in the kitty to support the fishing industry in key areas.

EMFF grants also have gone to the Forth, Highland/Moray, Argyll/Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Western Isles and Shetland fisheries local action groups.

Scotland has an allocation of about £83million from the EMFF scheme, which runs until 2020.

This is less than 2% of the overall value of the fund despite this country accounting for about 8% of the total EU fish catch.

Holyrood has long argued for a bigger share of the pot for Scotland, complaining the current allocation is among the lowest in Europe.

The programme opened to applications last month, and Mr Lochhead said he wanted as many bids as possible from eligible groups.

He added: “The fishing and aquaculture industries make a vital contribution, providing jobs and sustaining services, in many coastal communities around Scotland.

“The EMFF provides funding to support fishermen, sustainable aquaculture, the processing sector and the communities that depend on them.

“We have already seen applications being made and I’d encourage other eligible groups to think about whether they could benefit from this funding.

“For the first time in the UK, I have approved an allocation for fisheries local action groups which will benefit communities through funding job creation, diversification opportunities, opportunities for training and promotion of environmental measures.

“I am confident the local groups will make a real difference in the coastal communities they serve – from Shetland to Dumfries and Galloway.”

Pacifical and PNA secure MSC Certification for Yellowfin Tuna - Aquaculture Directory

Pacifical and PNA secure MSC Certification for Yellowfin Tuna - Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it

Yellowfin caught by the PNA Western and Central Pacific free school purse seine fishery is now eligible to carry the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) ecolabel. The sales and marketing of the PNA MSC certified yellowfin tuna will be done through the PNA global marketing company for its MSC certified tuna, Pacifical.

The Parties of the Nauru Agreement (PNA) is the first major free school purse seine yellowfin tuna fishery to achieve MSC certification. The certified fishery catches around 140,000 tonnes of yellowfin tuna a year, accounting for half of all yellowfin caught within PNA waters.

"Healthy tuna populations are essential for both the environment and fishing economies," says Nicolas Guichoux, Global Commercial Director at the Marine Stewardship Council. "The MSC Fisheries Standard provides a robust set of requirements to assess the sustainability of tuna fisheries. By achieving this Standard, the PNA has shown a huge commitment to securing a sustainable future for its oceans and fishing industry."
