As part of the preparation for the implementation of ILO C188, the first meeting of a special Fishing Industry Safety Group (FISG) to develop a voluntary safety management code was held at the NFFO office in York.  

The UK's federations proposed the development of a voluntary safety management system (SMS) to help co-ordinate the preparation of the ILO C188 Work in Fishing Convention due early next year.

ASC Certified Tilapia Recommended by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch ® Program « Aquaculture Directory | Aquaculture Directory | Scoop.it
With the release of a new benchmark report, Monterey Bay Aquarium has recognised Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified tilapia as equivalent or better to their Seafood Watch yellow rating—the colour associated with their Good Alternative category.  

The recommendation comes after an independent review of the standard by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program.

The region’s electricity distributor, Northern Powergrid, has launched a digital safety campaign urging anglers to stay away from power lines to prevent their next catch from being deadly.   

The campaign, which coincides with National Fishing Month (21 July – 3 September), will provide life-saving advice and encourage anglers to be aware and look around for overhead electricity lines so they can stay safe when fishing.

The company, which is part of Dawnfresh Seafoods, is one of the UK’s largest processors of seafood. It uses trout farmed on sites in Argyll to deliver the highest quality of products for top retailers such as M&S and Sainsbury’s.

• 60% of global catch of Toothfish is MSC certified  
• HIMI toothfish carrying the MSC blue label is traceable from ocean to plate 

The Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) Patagonian toothfish fishery has received recertification to the MSC standard for sustainable fishing. Originally certified in 2012, the fishery was reassessed by third-party auditor SCS Global Services. 

This recertification ensures that the fishery is sustainable and well managed.

The new version of the IFFO Responsible Supply (RS) standard is going to make a big difference to the fishmeal and fish oil industry, building on an already successful scheme, and is a very welcome upgrade.   

Despite the similar names, IFFO RS is independently managed and is a separate company to IFFO. It has always had an independent governing body and, as it has grown, has relied less on the administrative support we (IFFO) provided in the past.

Mediterranean Aquaculture Integrated Development is a new EU H2020 research project which brings together over 30 organisations from 12 different countries to improve aquaculture in the Mediterranean. 

Europe consumes twice as much seafood as it produces, with imports filling the gap. Aquaculture accounts for about 20% of production in Europe and directly employs around 85,000 people, mostly in rural and coastal areas.

Over a decade since North Sea cod stocks came close to collapse, shoppers and diners can finally buy the popular fish with a clear conscience following the announcement that Scottish and English cod boats, which are members of the Scottish Fisheries Sustainable Accreditation Group, are now MSC certified. 

Thanks to the enormous efforts of a coalition of fishing organisations with support from supermarkets, seafood brands and the industry body, Seafish, North Sea cod has passed an independent assessment against the MSC’s strict standard.
