A fish farm pen for the future 

The Fortress Pen System was developed in Tasmania by our team at Huon Aquaculture in response to a need to keep seals out, provide a safe platform for our staff to work on and allow us to farm further offshore. 

There was nothing available on the market, so we underwent a 2-year, new pen development project with funding support from the Australian Government’s Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture Subprogram: trial of a stock protection system for flexible oceanic fish pens).

Benchmark announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, INVE Aquaculture Holding BV (INVE), has successfully renewed its sales and marketing agreement with the Great Salt Lake Brine Shrimp Cooperative, Inc (GSL COOP). 

Under this long-term agreement, the Benchmark group maintains its rights to distribute a substantial share of the GSL COOP's harvest of artemia from the Great Salt Lake, Utah, the world's greatest source of brine shrimp, a natural live food widely used by the aquaculture industry in early stage nutrition.

Genetic variations enable different lice families to tolerate different amounts of fresh water and hot water, which are both used for delousing of farmed fish, researchers have discovered. 

The findings suggest that lice will eventually be able to develop increased tolerance to these treatments so that they become less effective, according to scientists at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and the Sea Lice Research Centre, both based at the University of Bergen in Norway.

It's an FDA-approved product called AquAdvantage Salmon, which integrates a Pacific Chinook salmon growth-hormone gene into the genome of an Atlantic salmon.

Ace Aquatec Ltd from Inverness in Scotland has developed a method for electric stunning of the fish in the sea, before a special pump brings the unconscious fish through a transporter pipe to the bleeding table. 3-5 electrodes in the sea stun the fish in a matter of 1 second in an area 1 meter from the transport pipe.

The Talley’s New Zealand skipjack tuna purse seine fishery, operated by Talley’s Group Limited, has been certified as sustainable, tipping the scale of MSC certified seafood out of New Zealand to over 50% of its total wild-caught commercial catch.  

To achieve MSC certification, the New Zealand skipjack fishery has demonstrated that it meets the high bar of sustainability set by the MSC Fisheries Standard.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is proud to announce the winners of the latest round of its scholarship program. The program provides funding of up to £4,000 to support research looking at environmental improvement, supply chain management or best practice in fisheries management. 

The two winners, Lily Zhao from the University of Washington, USA and Timothy Munyikana Kakai from Pwani University, Kenya were selected from a record 70 applications from 30 countries.

Seafood New Zealand says the industry is delighted that the Government has decided to bring forward the ban on microbeads. 

Associate Environment Minister, Scott Simpson announced today that the ban will take effect six months after World Trade Organisation notification, which means microbeads will be banned in New Zealand by May 2018.
