Seafood New Zealand says the industry is delighted that the Government has decided to bring forward the ban on microbeads. 

Associate Environment Minister, Scott Simpson announced today that the ban will take effect six months after World Trade Organisation notification, which means microbeads will be banned in New Zealand by May 2018.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is proud to announce the winners of the latest round of its scholarship program. The program provides funding of up to £4,000 to support research looking at environmental improvement, supply chain management or best practice in fisheries management. 

The two winners, Lily Zhao from the University of Washington, USA and Timothy Munyikana Kakai from Pwani University, Kenya were selected from a record 70 applications from 30 countries.

The amount of fish-free aquafeed sold during the contest thus far is estimated to be equivalent to nearly 100 million forage fish from the ocean.

Alaska’s seafood marketers have spent millions over the past few years to promote the idea that Alaska seafood is sustainable: that it isn’t overharvested and that fishing for salmon doesn’t harm the environment. 

A new study published last month in the journal Ocean and Coastal Management found that message may not matter — or at least, it may not matter as much as simpler things like the smell, look and taste of the seafood in the grocery store.
