Announced in March, the 30-month pilot programme, Accelerating Aquaculture Innovation (AAI) is led by HIE and delivered in partnership with Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC).

Lerøy will from next month produce salmon products rich in healthy fatty acids – with a reduced usage of scarce marine raw materials. A close cooperation between Lerøy and BioMar is going to ensure that salmon farmed by Lerøy will benefit from a sustainable high level of Omega 3-DHA in the feed partly deriving from the microalgae ingredient, AlgaPrime DHA. 

Lerøy states that this cooperation is an important step taking responsibility for building an even more sustainable aquaculture.

A new report from industry body Seafish has confirmed the potential for aquaculture in the proposed Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon (TLSB), which could be used to farm a range of marine species. 

The report is part of a trio of inter-related publications from "Closing the Circle: Aquaculture Development in Enclosed Waters", a project supported through Seafish's Strategic Investment Programme (SIP). SIP has allowed Seafish to fund additional, strategically important work consistent with its Corporate Plan objectives.

Farming mussels has always been a haphazard affair, but now New Zealand scientists have managed to coax them to breed in captivity. 

The first of 500 tonnes of the greenshell mussels from a joint Government-private company programme are about to be harvested in the Marlborough Sounds. The research promises to give farmers more control and certainty over growing the indigenous shellfish, worth $350 million to the economy.

Alaska’s scallop fishery is a small one; in recent years it has included four boats, with just one operating in Kamishak Bay in Lower Cook Inlet. The rest operate out of Kodiak on grounds stretching from Yakutat to the Bering Sea.

The MSC’s ambition is to strengthen engagement and impact in the Global South, Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs), priority markets and species, and with consumers, while continuing to deliver value to MSC certified fisheries.

Atlantic bluefin tuna, massive schooling fish renowned as a delicacy served raw in Japan, can be worth thousands of dollars apiece to fishermen. But catches declined in the waters off Cape Cod from 2.4 million pounds landed between 1996 to 2000 to a little over 1 million pounds from 2001 to 2005, and just 531,000 from 2006 to 2010.
