The Maine Department of Marine Resources is in the process of recalling mussels harvested from Frenchman Bay due to elevated levels of domoic acid, the biotoxin that causes Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). 

The recall follows a closure implemented yesterday of the area between East Point on MDI and Cranberry Point in Gouldsboro to the harvest of mussels, clams, oysters and whelks (carnivorous snails).

About 50 boats have taken to Tasmania's east coast waters to protest against salmon giant Tassal's new fish farm at Okehampton Bay. 

A flotilla of kayaks, jet skis and boats has made its way from the east coast fishing town of Triabunna to Tassal's new salmon lease, which will eventually hold up to 800,000 fish.

Simply Fresh Foods, Inc. of Buena Park, CA is recalling 272 cases of one specific lot of its 4-4 ounce packages of "San Francisco Seafood Salad Made with Greek Yogurt" bearing a UPC bar code of 47502 19701 because the individual cups inside the carton may be mislabelled as Seafood Salad with Real Mayonnaise and does not declare "milk". 

The outer carton is correct and has the correct ingredient statement which declares "milk". People who have allergies to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

Planning Board members on Sept. 5 unanimously approved a site plan from the Corea Lobster Co-op for construction of a refrigeration facility for its herring, according to Board Chairman Ray Jones. Jones said about 45 or 50 people attended the meeting. 

The site plan review was the only item on the board’s agenda. Neighbours who own property within 1,000 feet of the site where the facility will be built were notified as required by law of the meeting and given a chance to voice their concerns.

U.S.-based Seafood Watch’s ranking of B.C. open-net-pen farmed salmon as a “good alternative” seafood choice is problematic, according to SeaChoice, Canada’s sustainable seafood watchdog.

Seafood Watch’s shift in ranking from Red (avoid) to Yellow (good alternative) results from an improved score for the assessment criterion that measures whether disease transmission from farmed salmon to wild fish has population-level impacts on wild salmon.

“The Gulf Coast from Tampa Bay to Port Charlotte offers a unique environment for a diversity of bivalve species,” said Curtis Hemmel, one of the founders of Gulf Shellfish Institute, Inc., which has an office at Port Manatee.
