The birds are endemic to New Zealand, breeding on the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands in the Southern Ocean, 465 kilometres south of Bluff. 


The survey by helicopter is to track the albatross population size and trends. 


“These are important birds, that at times interact with our fisheries, so it’s vital for us to know how they are doing because we all need them to prosper,” said Richard Wells of Deepwater Group, a non-profit co-operative of deepwater fisheries quota owners.

Kampachi Farms, which counts up-market retailer Whole Foods and three Michelin-starred restaurant The French Laundry among its customers, has appointed UK-based M&A firm Cavendish Corporate Finance to find the investment.

Bouctouche company shut down because of money owed to 75 creditors 


The Bouctouche economy was dealt a significant blow earlier in January when Mills Seafood was put into receivership, four months after the company suddenly shut down. George Kinsman, a trustee with Ernst and Young, said the seafood company owes $1.5 million to 75 creditors and it went into receivership earlier this month.

For the third consecutive year, tests have found no radioactivity in Alaska seafood stemming from the 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, state officials announced Monday. 


The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said in a statement that seafood samples from Alaska waters in 2016 tested negative for three Fukushima-related radioactive isotopes: iodine-131, cesium-134 and cesium-137.

The partnership with CAPPMA represents the next step in GAA’s efforts to advance responsible aquaculture in China through the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification program, including better serving those already committed to BAP and responsible aquaculture.

The Responsible Aquaculture Foundation has expanded its selection of courses on water quality by adding Chinese and Spanish translations of three titles: Total Suspended Solids Management in Aquaculture, pH Management in Aquaculture and Dissolved Oxygen Management in Aquaculture. 


Users who take the free courses learn basic principles on the importance of the various water quality parameters, as well as how to measure them and establish optimum levels for efficient production. Those who complete all lessons within each course and score a passing grade on the optional quiz can earn a certificate of completion.

Seafood New Zealand has welcomed the announcement that the Government will ban the use of microbeads in make-up and other beauty products, citing their impact on oceans and marine life. 


Environment Minister Nick Smith’s announcement of a ban on microbeads is good news and one the industry is fully behind, Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Tim Pankhurst said. “These small plastic particles, which do not biodegrade are a well-known hazard to the environment,” Pankhurst said.

A new test to detect white spot disease in shrimps that gives on-the-spot results could save Rs 1,800 crore annual loss to the aquaculture industry in the country. 


The test, which could be conducted on a simple diagnostic strip by dropping a fluid from the gills of the shrimps, can detect the white spot disease in 20 minutes as against the current practice of sending samples to the laboratory and getting results in 3-5 days.

Huon Aquaculture is being sued for $17.5 million by feed supplier Ridley Agriproducts in the Supreme Court of Victoria for refusing to pay for fish food supplied from February 4 to July 22 last year.

State officials recently announced approval of a streamlined permitting process for the state's first commercial aquaculture program, but it will still be a while before Delawareans see locally harvested shellfish on the menu. 


The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control proposed a statewide activity approval process for aquaculture in spring 2016 – three years after commercial shellfish aquaculture in the Inland Bays was signed into law.

A chartered plane carrying tons of Boston lobsters, a favourite on festive dining tables during Lunar New Year celebrations, arrived Monday evening in Zhengzhou, capital of the central province of Henan. 


This is the first chartered air freight delivery of seafood ordered by Chinese buyers, another two planes will arrive before the start of the festival, which this year falls on Jan. 27.

The National Fisheries Institute, six seafood companies and two other seafood industry associations have filed a lawsuit to prevent the Obama administration from implementing a final rule to crack down on seafood fraud. 


The lawsuit was filed because the rule fails to adequately take into account the cost and impact of complying with the rule for seafood companies that are “doing the right thing,” NFI, the leading U.S. seafood industry trade association, said in a statement issued Monday.

Severe outbreaks of sea lice in Norway and Scotland as well as a deadly algae bloom that hit Chile in early 2016 meant supplies of global farmed salmon fell almost 9 percent from the previous year, the first decline in six years and the steepest fall in a quarter of a century.

On behalf of its client De Maas SMC, Dutch subsea technology company Seatools completed a feasibility and conceptual design study on a Remotely Operated Mort Collector (ROMoC). The study resulted in a highly automated mort collection system capable of effectively collecting dead fish in large-scale offshore fish farms as currently developed by De Maas SMC.
