The Tokyo metropolitan government said Monday it has set the time for relocating the operations of the Tsukiji fish market to the nearby Toyosu waterfront area at between September and October 2018. A specific date will be discussed with industry groups, according to the local government. 

The announcement came after Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike said in late August that the market, where daily fish auctions attract many tourists, will be moved no earlier than next June.

A Belfast-based seafood supplier has signed a six-figure deal with Tesco to sell its fresh fish directly to shoppers. 

The move into retail for Keenan Seafood will see the 70 year-old fish business bring some of its 250 lines to the supermarket's customers and create five new jobs in the process.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (October 16) that a Taiwan hairy crab sample was found to contain dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at a level exceeding the action level adopted by the CFS. 

Following risk assessment, the CFS has instructed the trade to suspend import into and sale within Hong Kong of hairy crabs raised in the same aquaculture farm (an aquaculture farm in Zhongli District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan) of the unsatisfactory sample with immediate effect.

New research conducted by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), an international non-profit offering certification for socially and environmentally responsible seafood, finds that a majority of Swedish consumers are aware that 40% of the fish they buy is farmed, but fewer are aware of how to reconcile their concerns about the impact of farmed fish with their buying decisions. 

“Our research shows that buying responsibly produced fish and seafood is important to Swedish shoppers,” says Barbara Janker, ASC Commercial Marketing Manager for Northern Europe.

Every day, fishermen brave the waters of Alaska to bring wild seafood from the sea to table for the world to enjoy. To recognize the men and women dedicated to harvesting wild, natural and sustainable seafood, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) put out a call for video submissions for the first-ever Alaska Seafood Commercial Fishing Video Contest. 

ASMI received entries from fishermen who shared their personal stories showcasing why an exhausting but beautiful life on or near the water is worth it for many reasons. The contest is one of many efforts all-month long to celebrate National Seafood Month in October.

Qatar’s ministerial committee on the stimulation and engagement of the private sector in the country’s economic development projects recently launched the first private sector fish farming project with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per year, said a report. 

The ministerial committee is chaired by the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.

Since the end of 2014, consumers in the European Union (EU) have had access to better information when buying fishery and aquaculture products. 

Mandatory labels or markings for retail sale of seafood (including some types of processed seafood) must, in particular, include information on both the commercial and the scientific names of the species, whether it has been fished or farmed, the catch area or country of production, and the fishing gear used.

• In India, where seasonal fisheries restrictions are commonly flouted and people typically buy fresh seafood from local markets, conservationists say a change toward seasonal eating could help improve the health of marine ecosystems.

The redevelopment of the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, better known as Cefas, will see some existing buildings, including a former hotel, demolished. 

Refurbishment work is planned to start in November on an existing building at the site with work due to start on the new office building in January 2018, once final partnership funding is in place.

IFFO, The Marine Ingredients Organisation, has calculated new Fish In: Fish Out ratios (FIFO) for 2015 and for the first time FIFO figures for salmonids are below 1. Calculated with FAO data, Fish In: Fish Out ratios (FIFO) have been used by as a way of reviewing the consumption of wild fish by the sector since the 1990s. 

Salmonids have drawn attention on this subject in the past, and have been criticised previously for their use of fishmeal and fish oil.  In 2015 the sector produced more fish protein than it consumed.

Shortlisted as semi-finalists for the Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year Award - one of 15 categories in the 2018 National Fish & Chip Awards - the 20 shops will now compete for a place in the final and the chance to clinch the title of 'UK's best fish and chip restaurant'. 

Hailing from across the UK, the 20 restaurants in what are considered to be the 'Oscars' of the fish and chip industry.

Just a week after the state Department of Fish and Wildlife approved shipment of 1 million more farmed Atlantic salmon to Cooke Aquaculture’s fish farm near Bainbridge Island, another state agency says it has found a hole in the nets and corrosion in the structure of the facility. 

The Department of Natural Resources on Monday notified Cooke that it is in default of the terms of its lease at its Rich Passage operation.

In two weeks’ time, the MS Nyksund, a new high-tech vessel for shipping fish feed will be put into service for BioMar. 

As part of the process of modernising BioMar’s shipments of fish feed, an agreement was signed in 2015 with NSK Shipping AS for the construction of a new feed carrier.
