A proposal to increase the cost of commercial fishing licenses to fund scientific research in a lean budget year is drawing fire from Maine lobstermen. 

Julie Eaton, a 30-year lobster boat captain from Deer Isle, told a legislative panel at the State House on Friday that a 30 percent increase in lobster license fees would be too much on top of all the other costs of doing business, ranging from $125 to replace lost traps to $185 for monthly oil changes to bait bills that have doubled in the last year alone.

Tassal's plan to put 28 pens in the water at Okehampton Bay has been met with heated opposition from environmentalists and recreational fishers.

People who eat types of fish that are typically high in mercury are twice as likely to be diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal progressive neurodegenerative condition affecting nerves in the brain and spinal cord. 

ALS (also known as motor neurone disease) is caused by progressive damage to the nerve cells that transmit signals from the brain to the muscles to control movement. The factors that lead some people to develop ALS are not yet known, but are believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Located in South Surrey, British Columbia, the plant is expected to start operations in July 2017, process approximately 12,000 tonnes of salmon annually, and serve customers in Western Canada and North West USA.

Salmon farming nemesis Don Staniford has warned the continued use of antibiotics to combat disease in the industry is a public health risk. 

Mr Staniford, an arch critic of the sector for years, cited figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa). He also highlighted scientific papers claiming a link between the use of antibiotics on fish farms and increased bacterial resistance to the drugs.

An outbreak of norovirus linked to B.C.-harvested oysters is now under federal investigation. 

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) says it has taken on a leadership role in the investigation, now that cases have been reported in Alberta and Ontario, as well as B.C. As of February 14, the agency says it's aware of 221 reported cases of norovirus connected to B.C. oysters.

A hearing into objections against the granting of a licence for a salmon farm in Bantry Bay has heard that, were the development to go ahead, it could prove a “tipping point” for local families who have fished the area for generations. 

The two-day hearing into the granting of the licence to Marine Harvest heard from a number of the 14 appellants and from the company itself, which was appealing on different grounds.

A Hawaii committee has advanced a bill that seeks to provide more oversight of the commercial fishing industry after an Associated Press investigation found hundreds of foreign fishermen confined to boats and some living in subpar conditions. 

The proposal advanced Tuesday would require fishing boat owners who want a commercial license to provide a copy of employment contracts with every fisherman on board before the state grants a license.

IFFO has published a position paper analysing the forage fish dependency ratio (FFDR) to provide clear information on this complex debate. 

FFDR is an often quoted term in the dialogue on fed aquaculture sustainability, but caution needs to be exercised in how the information is interpreted, and the figures produced for FFDR should not be examined in isolation nor should values for FFDR be used directly as measures of environmental sustainability.

Avinor, the national airport operator in Norway, has confirmed that DHL is to launch a new domestic freighter service linking Oslo Airport with Lakselv Airport Banak, a gateway in the far north of the country. 

The Airbus 300 freighter link will offer a cargo capacity of approximately 40 tons. Depending on volumes and on demand, the route will be flown anything from once to several times a week, Avinor said.

Two trawler operators have gone on trial for hiring two Filipino fishermen after an investigation into the recruitment of non-EU fishermen in Ireland. 

Owners of the Labardie Fisher, Leonard Hyde (62) from Crosshaven, Co Cork and Pat O’Mahony (50), from Kinsale, Co Cork each denied two separate charges when they appeared at Cork District Court.

Some of the Chesapeake Bay's most densely populated oyster sanctuaries could be opened to periodic harvesting under a plan being floated by state officials, setting up more conflict between alarmed environmentalists and watermen seeking to make a living. 

Neither side is pleased with the first draft of a new map of sanctuary boundaries in Maryland's share of the bay. While watermen would gain some territory they ceded when a state oyster restoration strategy launched in 2010, dredging would be banned in other areas that are now open to harvesting.

The New Zealand paua industry has welcomed today’s announcement that the shell fishery closure at Kaikoura and eastern Malborough is to be extended beyond three months. 

Primary Industries Minister, Nathan Guy, has announced that the closure, which was made under emergency regulations, will see the fishery fully protected until at least November 20.

An international partnership met in Reykjavík today to scope out a new Aquaculture Innovation Network for the Northern Periphery and Arctic (AINNPA) aimed at improving innovation support for remotely located aquaculture businesses and, in turn, enabling demand-driven products and services.   

Supported by the Interreg NPA programme via the European Regional Development Fund, AINNPA brings together innovation experts from the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Ireland, Norway and Scotland, and is led by the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC), located at the University of Stirling.
